Well, before, I had installed itunes v7.7, and like a lot of users, their ipod became corrupt.

well 7.7.1 came out and it seemed to fix a lot of peoples ipods, mine remains corrupt, and when i try to restore i get the same error as i did with the earlier version, 7.7.

"An unknown error has occurred (1437)"
- the error i receive when i try to restore my ipod.

Ummm. . . you didn't really do anything there but reset your iPod a couple of times.

Disk Mode - Press Menu + Center, then when the screen goes black release and press Center + Play. Disk mode is like safe mode on a Windows PC. Just loads the minimum to work.

Reset iPod - just press Menu + Center. A reset is just like restarting your computer. Turns the iPod off then reloads the iPod's software. You don't have to unplug anything or plug anything in.

Both of these are done while the iPod is disconnected from the computer. Once you get in to Disk Mode it does say okay to disconnect, even though it's not connected to anything.

All you really did was reset your iPod like 3 or 4 times. The article where you make the batch file, think it said for error code -50, worked for me.

Followed the various instructions above - running .bat file, disk mode, reboot, etc. Good news: iTunes stopped telling me that my iPod needs to be reformatted. Unfortunately, now it's not recognizing my iPod at all. For me, this all started when I "upgraded" to iTunes 8.

Apple needs to give themselves a real shake. They talk a lot about Microsoft spending more on advertising than product development. For my money, time for them to start walking the talk. iTunes has become bloated, slow and, apparently, causes problems with their products. Would be nice if they actually responded to one of these forum posts.

*hmmm...so it seems to me that it's just plain luck if you can get your ipod to restore as i've tried all the solutions above and still nothing...it starts to restore then gives the same 1437 error message. I called the help centre and after a 30 minute wait the guy on the other end tried a couple of things that didn't work and when i asked "ok what's next" there was an awkward silence then he decided it was easier to hang up on me than to simply say "Sorry mate, but your F@#ked!". So thanks for nothing...oops i mean thanks for the f@#ked up version 8 itunes which has left me sitting here holding my dick*

OMG, my wife just let me know that she still has itunes 7 installed on her laptop, so i plugged my ipod in and instantly it work 100%. IT'S NOT CORRUPTED IPOD'S, IT ITUNES 8 THAT IS CORRUPT. To the CEO's of the Apple Co...get your head out of your arse and fix version 8, i was about to throw out my ipod convinced that it was stuffed. So anyone with the error 1415 or 1437or similiar. Try and back date your itune to version 7 and you might find that your troubles go away. I REPEAT...THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE IPOD'S, IT'S ITUNES VERSION 8!!!!!!

I uninstalled all the USB Root Hubs in Device Manager. After rebooting the computer, all the Hubs automatically reinstalled. I connected my iPod and everything worked just fine. I am still a bit worried however since there is a yellow caution triangle over "USB Mass Storage Device" in Device Manager, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for now. So, at least the 1437 error seems to be solved for me. I hope this approach works for others.

cannnn anyone help me please? okay so just yesterday i was listening to my ipod when all of a sudden it turned off and starting making weird noises from the inside. then the sad faced ipod came on so i assumed i had a hardware issue. i checked out the website and it said to put it in disk mode and whatever. then my ipod actually turned on just all my songs and videos were erased so i thought my ipod was cured but when i plugged it into itunes to put everything back on, it said that i have an unknown error 1437. i read previous comments that said to use itunes 7 which i have on my old laptop. when i tried it, it did not work at all. any suggestions? i cannot live without my ipod.

Resetting tons of times did not work for me. It does take some work but I was able to get my 3G Nano working after these steps.

The symptom of the problem is that even thought the iPod was recognized, it would not start the restore process. I connected the ipod to another computer, since it was not the one it was already synced with, it erased and essentially restored the ipod. While that was happening, I reinstalled itunes on the computer I was using before. I'm sure a reinstall of itunes was all I needed but whatever...it works now...just waiting to sync all the music and podcasts....

I am having this problem too. I purchased it off eBay. Apparently it should've been an "easy fix" but I guess not.

I read other topics saying to reformat your iPod in disk mode. Doesn't work for me. And I'm having 1437 Error as well. I don't understand why Apple can't help us. Microsoft would!

Reinstalling the .dll files almost worked. It said it was successful, but it went back into restoration mode again.

Next I am trying iTunes 7.7 and we'll see how that works.

I'm wondering if I just buy a new hard drive...will that fix the problem? I have no problem spending another $30-$40 if I can just get my iPod to work.

*There are two solutions*
And there are possibly two problems.
I took my iPod 5th Generation 30GB to the Apple Store. I will cut you down right here, because I came back with no good news.
Either the Hard Drive is failing or the Logic Board is failing. If its the Hard Drive, you can replace that for $90.00
If its the Logic Board, it'd be a waste of money.
Don't buy the parts from eBay either, the dude said they don't work.
Apple doesn't sell them.
You can buy refurbished 5th Gens from the store for $130
You can take in your raped iPod and get 10% off on a purchase.
*How to diagnose*
First you have to ask yourself how could this have been caused?
Hard Drive Failure- hard drives are like babies. There are little discs that shatter like THAT. Did you drop it? Did you drop it too many times? Were you running with it (this is a bad idea to do with classics.)
Logic Board- defectiveness, did it over heat? Did it freeze? Did it get wet? Was there a little moisture? Did it get shocked? Did you overcharge it (what chargers have you been using. Make sure your wall charger have iC chips).
This really disappointed me. Don't take the same path as me and waste $400.00
Sorry about your luck.

I was able to fix this error in a way I haven't seen doc'd anywhere else.
By accident I pulled the ribbon cable that goes to the hard disk out of the
motherboard/logicboard connector. Since it was out I cleaned the cable's
contacts w/ a pencil eraser. The back part (black) of the connector flips
up, but whether it was up or down didn't seem to make much difference in
the difficulty of getting the cable back in.

But after I carefully got it back in, iTunes 8.2.0.23 (windows) acted a
little differently, instead of saying "restore and upgrade" it just said
restore and the bar graph grew from the end instead of being a sort of
"cylon" eye and the gen4 classic iPod was restored.

So maybe this error can be also be caused by a corrosion or oxidation issue,
might explain the "out of the blue" problems folks have been having.

Another thunk I was going to pursue if this didn't work was to use the
RockBox installation info to put a new "MBR" on the hard disk.
