Ipod nano Not detected in my computer or itunes

Okay, first off, I have tried several different things to correct this issue, and NOTHING has become remotely helpful.

My computer doesn't even make the little "ding" sound that I get with all my other usb devices upon plug in. The ipod will be charging and nothing else, nothing in device manager, my computer, itunes and wherever else it is at. The Ipod was given to my by a friend who moved away a few weeks ago, and I finally got the charger yesterday. The ipod can play songs and what-have-you but will not connect to the computer in anyway but to charge. Resetting does NOT work, I repeat, it does NOT work.
I cannot restore it as it doesn't even get detected by anything on the computer. The cord is NEW so it is not that, all the usb ports WORK so it couldn't be that, and it is not my computer as I tried on a laptop and another desktop. I refuse to send it in for repairs as I do not wish to spend money on something I haven't even got to use, and would be extremely upset to get it sent back saying it's faulty. :/
Oh and itunes is the latest version.

READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE OFFERING HELP.
I will not read anything mentioning resetting, ports, computers, cable and all the stuff I have ALREADY tried.

I HAVE FOUND AN ANSWER!!!

i have an ipod nano (3g) and whenever my ipod is connected, nothing happened. NOW i have an answer!!!

in itunes press 'help' and then 'run diagnostics' an select the ipod connectivity tests (3rd down). After the test, in ports, press the button on the side and it should go to the apple help site for this particlar reason. this page is what you want - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US

if you go through the steps then it should eventually work. mine worked after the second step (Remove iTunes). note: it doesnt just remove it, it reinstalls.

This saved my life!!! thank you for reading and i hope this gives success to most ipod users!!!

When I got on itunes I went under help I ran a diagnoses and everything was ok but the Ports: No iphone or ipod is found... But after that is done you can clipboard your info. the serial number that is on it is from my old ipod... What should I do??

HI,
What’s up with the iPods and Windows? I installed iTunes and my nano worked fine. I loaded all my music. Everything went well. The Next time I tried to connect, the USB device was not recognized. I tried it on second computer (installed the newest iTunes first) and got the same message so I doubt it is Windows. The iPod works. I just can't get computers to see it. I tried restarting the iPod service but the computers still do not recognize it. This is the only device I am having a problem with.
Any advice is appreciated.
