Ethernet cable unplugged

My wired internet has stopped working - internet connect says the ethernet cable is unplugged (it isn't). I have tried a different cable and a different port on the router. Rebooted router and macbook. Reset the pram and system management unit. Ran hardware test and it shows no problems. What else can I try?

yes this works, and dependent on the LAN you are connecting to you might even have to go down to 10M before the interface really comes up.

The only issue with this is, that next time my Macbook is connected to WLAN only, the LAN interface still shows ups in the confguration, although no cable connected, because of the manual setting, which is weird, but this is what happens. This causes MAC OS trying to send data through the LAN interface instead of WLAN (because of better metric of LAN), hence no connectivity, which means you have to change the manual setting back to auto.

I can really not understand what the issue here is to fix this, as at least for my MBP there has been no issue at all, up to a particular version of Snow Leopard.

I solved this problem too.

My port was not making a good connection. The cable tested fine. The port connected intermittently if the cable was wiggled a bit up and down while watching the Network preference pane. The OS was newly installed from the the startup disks.

I shut down the computer. With good light and good magnification, I ever so gently took a sewing needle and gave each little wire at either side of the port a gentle lift near the middle of the pin to bend it up to (almost) the same height as the center pins.

It works great now.

Since the port was damaged, I also ordered a one foot cat.6 cable and a cable connector to take the strain off the computer port.

Two days ago my Mac Mini suddenly started reporting Ethenet Cable Unplugged on my home network. The cabling is only 6 months old and I am using a TP Link ethernet switch. The Mac Mini is core i7 late 2012 model (Macmini6,2) with the BMC5701 ethernet module. I am running OSX 10.8.5. Over the last few weeks, we have been noticing an increasing number of network interruptions with other computers on our home network.

Yesterday I wasted many hours wading through hundreds of messages about this Ethenet Cable Unplugged problem and trying almost all the suggested fixes with no success.

I had tested this ethernet port with my old Macmini1,1 (Ethernet via AirPortAtheros21.kext) and with a new Cubox-12eX. Both of these machines connected immediately to the Ethernet switch and its indicator lights showed 1000baseT connection.

Therefore I assumed that the "Ethernet Cable Unplugged" problem was due to a hardware or software failure on the Macmini6,2.

This morning I noticed that I could get a tenuous connection at 100baseT by wiggling the ethernet plug, not at the computer end, but at the patch board socket near the ethernet switch 10 metres away. This led me to do some more rigorous testing of my home network. I discovered that my Macmini6,2 could actually connect to the ethernet switch if I ran a 5 meter cable from the Mac Mini to a port in the adjoining room. And it connected at 1000. It still fails to connect via the socket in my office, even though other computers connect at full speed.

The only conclusion I can draw is that the BMC5701 hardware is less tolerant of marginal ethernet cabling than other ethernet modules.

I read with interest in some forums that many users had received new motherboards or even new computers, sometimes at Apple's expense, even though this fault could not be replicated at an Apple shop.

I recommend that anyone having this problem should fully investigate the quality of their home network cabling.

Hope this helps someone.

I start having this problem cos my Wifi isn't strong enough.

Plugging in is much faster, and it works perfectly fine in the bootcamp Win7.

I agree with previous post saying the ethernet didn't wait long enough to connect and "gave up" too soon,

cos it connects for a second and disconnect again, wasn't the problem of the cable for sure.

This solution helps me after searching for a millions of posts!!!

Hi.

I spent all night trying to fix "Cable Unplugged - Either the cable for Ethernet is not plugged in or the device at the other end is not responding" issue with Mac mini 2009, after changing the ram and SSD and installing El Capitan.

I tried almost everything what I found on forums with no luck. Next day morning I gave it a second look of Ethernet port at the back side on Mac mini.

One of the contacts was bend down a little!!!!!

So I used a needle to gently pull the contact up and after plugging the cable, the green light came on. YES!

I hope this "stupid" fix will help someone.
