Duplicate Calender entries? Here's a solution

Like me, some iPhone/MobileME users have ended up with duplicate Calendar Events on the iPhone and in Microsoft Entourage, usually from multiple sync attempts of recurring Calendar Events like Birthdays and Holidays. In fact, after MobileMe syncing during the first rough week after the iPhone was released, my Entourage Calendar contained over 4,000 duplicate Events going back seven years! I found an Entourage Script on The Web that promised to delete these duplicates. It ran for seven hours, deleted a handful, but then timed out.

Time to rethink this problem. By nosing around Entourage, I discovered that you can't use the Shift key to select multiple Event items in Month, Week or Day View. This makes deleting multiple Calendar Events a very tedious proposition.

However, I learned that in Entourage, you can use the Shift key to select multiple items in the Search Results window. Here's the work around I finally used this knowledge to get rid of duplicate Entourage Calendar Events. Fortunately, I had tagged my Holiday and Calendar Items with color coded Category tags.

1. In Entourage, I selected List View (rather than Month or Week) to view my Events in a linear view and examine data entry patterns. I quickly saw that I might be able to quickly delete large groups of events if I
2. Searched for Events with no Category tag AND containing the Word "Day" (Birthday and most Holiday's have the word "day" in the title).
3. It was time consuming, but relatively easy to shift-select multiple Calendar Events (about 100-300 at a time) and delete these duplicate items from the Search Results.

The original Event used to create the "recurring" series of Events was not typically on this list, so it usually was protected, though I did see a few original entries show up in the search results for some odd reason. I think it took me about an hour to clear out all the duplicates. It's not exactly an automated way of using a computer's processing power, but it worked.

I'd recommend repairing the Entourage database and perhaps running Disk Utilities Permissions Repair and a Disk Warrior Directory Rebuild afterwards, but I have no special knowledge whether this will protect your database. I just use these tools regularly to keep my system tuned.

Been here, done that ...

I had this very same duplication problem really bad a few months ago. I deleted everything as you suggested. The problem started back up literally the next time I synch'd. I did the deletion thing again but this time deleted my Entourage Sync Preferences and iSync preferences and that seemed to resolve the problem for a short period (about a month). Did it all again then I installed MobileMe a few weeks later and the problem came back. Got rid of it once again and sure enough, a month later (thought it was gone), it's back.

I just went through and deleted the duplicate entries again but not the preferences. I'm going to do some test entries to see if it matters where you enter in a calendar entry, if it's started on the iPhone, Entourage, or Calendar. I doubt Calendar because I never put them into Calendar.

Any body else having this problem who could offer some insight? It would be appreciated.

I, too, continue to have this problem, but only with invitations. When I receive a meeting invitation from someone, it goes into Entourage and appears on my calendar as Tentative. It also shows up as a duplicate on my iPhone. The worst part is that there isn't any way to delete these from the phone since the Edit button isn't displayed. (What's up with that?) The only way to delete one is to go to Entourage and use the hit-or-miss method of deleting since it's impossible to figure out which appointment belongs to Entrouage and which to the iPhone.

Is anyone is Apple engineering monitoring this forum? If so, PLEASE put the Edit button back on ALL events and let the user delete duplicates right from the phone. Even better, figure out what's causing the problem and keep it from happening.

Hi,

I've got this problem but it seems to be intermittent. I just can't get Entourage, iCal and Mobile Me to work properly together on Calendar entries. I seem to spend half my time deleting multiple duplicate entries. It works ok for a while and then the problem comes back. Any ideas on the right combination of settings or is it a glitch that needs addressing?
