3g Reception Greatly Improved with 2.01 update

Does anyone else notice this? I've noticed that the modem firmware was updated as well. My reception is much better. I'm now getting 2 or 3 bars we I had 0 or 1 before.

No improvement in terribad 3G reception at my house after 2.0.1. I've had this phone for 1 week now and had no problems other than really bad 3G reception (1 bar at best in places that should have 3-4 bars, several dropped calls.) I just got off the phone with AT&T and they say coverage in my home area is "great" for data and "moderate to good" for voice. They suggest it could be a problem with the phone itself, which I am inclined to believe. I'm just not very confident a replacement phone will improve things. But I will be heading down to the Apple store tomorrow to either replace this phone or return it. I'm very disappointed because, aside from terrible 3G reception, this is a great little device.

Very good question, and a good point. But no, that's not how I decided that.

I found that I still drop calls and that 3G/GSM transition often takes about the same amount of time. dBm readings are about the same as well, (-113 to -105 when in my hand) though those are nothing compared to real-world experience. (Note that you can still get awesome data speeds with poor signal.)

I don't doubt that some folks have seen a significant improvement. Maybe even most, or nearly all. I just haven't yet. I'm still going to try again with a full restore. It'll also be good to see if there's any lift at night when cell breathing effects might be reduced a bit.

Premature? Possibly. But it's also useful to know that not everyone gets a "wow, what an improvement" in this regard right out of the gate either.

I've noticed on my phone that it seems to be showing more bars for a given dBm value. So I'm not quite sure the actual reception is any better, or if the phone is just telling me it is better. I haven't had a chance to get out and try it in the 3g dead zone on my commute to see if it hands off instead of drops off...I'll try it tomorrow and hope for the best!

Can I just ask how you see the -90dBm? Is this in field test mode( 3001#12345#) or some other way? In field test mode is it number which appears right at top left (next to "O2-UK" as I'm in UK)

Yes, yes, and yes. Sheesh. 🙂

If you hold the home button for several seconds, the app will quit and leave you with numbers instead of bars. If you then tap on the numbers, you can switch to bars and back as you prefer.

After the 2.0.1 update, I'm seeing -99 to 107. Before the update, I was seeing, something like -93 to -103. I don't attribute that to the update; I believe I'm getting exactly the same amount of signal as I did an hour ago and for the past three weeks.
