Does anyone else notice this? I've noticed that the modem firmware was updated as well. My reception is much better. I'm now getting 2 or 3 bars we I had 0 or 1 before.

Why dont Apple just say what the update is supposed to do?

I'm up here in Seattle and after the update I'm a lot happier. Before my first gen iPhone would sit at my desk with only one bar, but now it's at three bars. And my 2.0.1 update went with out a hitch. No problems...
This is a serious design flaw. Regardless if you talking about 2g or 3g. The antenna is located at the bottom of the phone. No software update will ever fix this. when i showed the manager of my local ATT store the huge differance in the strength single of my iphone(1bar) and my wifes BlackBerry(3bars) He just shrugged and said " im not the only customer to complain". This is why the iphone will never be used for Business, only for social applications.
In my user feedback to apple I said this very same thing, it'll always be a toy, a nice product to use, but not on a 'professional' level.

After the 2.0.1 update, I'm seeing -99 to 107. Before the update, I was seeing, something like -93 to -103.
Lower numbers (or larger numbers if you discard the minus sign) are worse. -99 to -107 is worse than -93 to -103.
Wow Raul,
I can't believe what I read in your post! Does this mean the "meeting" between you and KBeat is off? What do you contribute the constant steady signal to?
Great news!
Thanks,
Doug

Once you get the number or bars how do you make it go away? (Bars only?) I tried restarting the phone and that didn't work.

I've noticed on my phone that it seems to be showing more bars for a given dBm value.
I was doing a bunch of tests the past few days using the -db numbers and relating them to bars. After the update it's still, more or less, the same. I say "more or less" because the -db numbers don't always give the same bar reading on 3G. For example, a -95 will usually give you a reading of 2 bars. However, and I'm told this is related to how many towers the phone is actually communicating with, -95 will on occasion report 3 bars. I'm working up a chart to show what the iPhone bars relate to with given -db numbers since it varies so much from phone manufacturer to phone manufacturer. It's too bad there isn't an agreed upon standard.
Anyway, I've been writing all these down for a few days and after the update the "bars to -db values" is still pretty much the same.
FWIW: Yesterday, at my son's football practice I was getting -db numbers of -51 to -53. These are by far the best numbers I've seen since getting the iPhone. Obviously his practice field must be near a tower, but I have no idea how so many people on these forums know right where their 3G towers are, as I have no clue where the AT&T towers are in my area. However, since the update my iPhone has shown far more "no service" messages than I ever had before. Probably just a coincidence, but I figured I'd toss it into the mix.

I agree I'm now getting a reading of -90 dbm and its a constant steady signal, I'm not getting anymore dropped calls and I have also noticed the whole OS is much snappier and stable.
I'm really impressed with this update!
Thank you Apple
Wow Raul,
I can't believe what I read in your post! This is GREAT news for you. A couple of your previous posts...
+*And if you guys really want to help please return you're iPhones and get new ones, please don't take no for an answer because they will try to convince you it's an AT&T problem.*+
+*I'm on my third batch of iPhones just make an appointment and use all the faults the phones have and demand to get a new iPhone.*+
+*And it's clear that Doug was harassed for creating this thread, so now Doug has three perfectly working 3G iPhones. Wow what are the odds of that?*+
+*I just got back from the Apple Store at the Grove in Los Angeles, and once again I got three more phones replaced so I'm officially on my third batch.*+
+*And guess what they all work the same as before!*+
And...
+*Are you serious?*+
+*I can do the same with my phone and show you the exact same results you have and guess what that proves nothing.*+
+*I guarantee 1000% you won't make a video on a moving car while doing these test because you know for a fact its*+
Etc, etc, etc...
Does this mean the "meeting" between you and KBeat is off?
Thanks,
Doug
Sacramento area here. It's supposed to be a strong 3G area, and usually I get 2-5 bars. I had checked my phone's speed at testmyiphone.com previously and on 3G it was usually 250-500 kbps. My wi-fi was usually .90 to 1.2 mbps. This morning after updating it last night I checked 3G and it came back 4 times at over 1.4 mbps. I don't know if that is correct or even possible. I did notice that before it gave me the results it said the test size was too small and it needed to take a bigger sample. It doesn't do that with Edge or Wi-fi. It also came back another time at 770 kbps. I checked my wifi and it was still right around 1 mbps. I checked my Edge speed and it was between 160 to 250 kbps. Just checked 3G again and it came back at 1.24 mbps, but again gave me the "test was too small" note before the results.
I am getting slightly better 3G reception in my house. Contacts seem to load faster, keyboard is still slow on Safari.

For what it's worth, my 3G reception is 1 to 2 bars lower in the few places I take note of it, even after a reset. :-/
i am in central NJ and i used to get full 3g everywhere but in my basement i got full edge.. now i get full edge in the basement
I noticed the 3G reception is the same, but the bars are a little 'higher' than normal. That's just my perception.
I live in Tampa, FL and have not seen improvements with the 3G reception after updating to 2.01. I am just going off the fact that I get zero bars and bounce in and out of 3G indoors; this did not improve after updating. The ATT representative told me I am in a strong area and should talk to apple about my 3G reception problems. Frustrating, I pretty much keep 3G off because I drop too many calls bouncing between 3G and the Edge network. Outside I get 3 or 4 3G bars, but lose them all once I go indoors. I sort of wish I had the old iphone; the 3G capabilities are worthless if you can't utilize them.
I'm just south of Seattle and still have 1 or no bars with "no service." When I turn off 3G it works fine.
3g Reception Greatly Improved with 2.01 update
