Same here, it goes not service at all if the 3G is on. Also, it does not search for the 2G network as the previous firmware did. One must manually turn off the 3G in order to have 2G signal. Very said! 😟
What is the difference between holding both buttons until you get the Apple logo and holding the lock button until you get the power off slider and sliding it so it shuts off?
I talked to Apple today. They wanted to replace my phone. If I have time, I am going to go to a store and try to have it replaced. Problem is it is hard to get in for a replacement right now.
I would like to ask if others have the same issue I will explain below. I have not had time to read all the posts, there are a lot of them, but from what I have read it sounds like many people are having at least similar issues. I apologize if I have repeated something already pointed out.
The issue is that if I am in a area where there is poor coverage (GPRS/EDGE/3G) and the phone sometimes switches from edge (E shown) to "No Service" and to GPRS (solid little square shown) and back and forth, and then I go to where there is 3G coverage (I have had 3G on all this time on the phone) the phone will not, or will take minutes to get any signal. If, however, when I am in the 3G coverage area and the phone says "No Service" I shut off 3G, the phone will within seconds get a edge (E displayed) and then I turn 3G back on and within seconds I get a 3G (3G shown) signal.
From what I have seen and read, the problem lies in the software in the phone, not with the AT&T 3G (or other) network. It seems to me that the phone is having a problem with switching between E, G, and 3G. I have read several posts where other phones in the same exact location work fine whereas the IPhone has a problem. That, it would seem to me, eliminates the AT&T network, at least as being the sole root cause of the problem. It would seem the other phones in this case would also have an issue switching between towers. Also supporting this theory is that it seems to have gotten worse since I upgraded to 2.0.1. This would be good news in a way in that it should be able to be fixed with an upgrade to the software. This assumes, however, that this is not some sort of issue with the hardware of the radios switching circuit inside the phone. I think that it is more likely to be the software.
I had horrible problems with losing 3G and then getting "no service" for 2 or 3 minutes before the phone would switch to Edge. If I lost 3G during a call, the call was dropped.
Since 2.0.1 did not help, I took my phone to the Apple Store. The Apple Genius ordered a new one for me (they were out of white ones), but suggested in the meantime that I restore my phone, but instead of restoring from a backup, set it up like a new phone. He said sometimes bad stuff from backups can cause problems.
I didn't believe that it would help, but since I had to wait for a phone anyway, I did as he suggested. I was absolutely gobsmacked when it worked. I can get 3G in places I never could before. When I lose 3G, it switches seamlessly to Edge without dropping the call. I opted to keep this phone, because it has nothing else wrong with it.
If you've tried that, and the other "fixes" represented in various threads here, then take it back and get a new one. Some people have reported much better reception with new phones, and it is known that Apple made some modifications between the first phones and later ones.
Hello. I am experiencing the same reception problems as you explained. And it all started happening after I upgraded to 2.0.1 software. I've also had other problems since the software update. I am starting to get really upset at Apple. Pretty soon I will be shouting profanities at Steve Jobs...
I was not having the best reception with 2.0 but now that I have updated to 2.0.1 it's worse.
I updated to 2.0.1 and now have to reset my phone in a 3G area to get the 5 BARS of 3G service available! Why doesnt it just detect it and change? The phone cycles through Edge to GPRS to no Service otherwise. Is it really that big of a deal to put out an update to FIX THIS!!!?
In addition, it would be nice if Apple could really team up with AT&T and develop an iPhone Tech Support line that does not charge minutes!!! waiting for 15 - 30 minutes to talk to someone and then to work through the process is EXPENSIVE! Team up with the 611 number! 1800myiphone isnt good enough
I was having the same issue, When I first got my iPhone I could receive 3G in my office, I guess I wasn't paying attention but today when I went to stream some music I noticed it was only edge and performing poorly. I did a restore back to original factory settings and now 3g works again.
