ATT Bill

I've owned my new iPhone for almost 3 weeks. Today I got a bill for $161, which was, ahem, more than I was expecting, considering I gave Apple $69 for... activating? the phone, but the bill shows a $36 "activation fee', so what was the $69 for?

Is this reasonable?

I haven't owned a cellphone for years since I have a blackberry chained to my wrist but I must say I'm impressed with the amount of gibberish on that bill.

You are not giving Apple $69, and you don't pay Apple anything for activating a new account with at&t.

at&t charges $36 to activate a new account - regardless the chosen phone. Part of this pays for the credit check.

There is no detail regarding what the additional $33 is for?

Did you activate your iPhone at an at&t store or at an Apple store? at&t provided me a copy of what my first bill for my iPhone 3G would look like and include. This is because I activated the iPhone 3G during the middle or 3rd week of my current billing cycle.

As a new subscriber, you pay a pro-rated portion of the current billing cycle, and for the first month of the next or full billing cycle.

I paid Apple $69 for something and ATT $36 for something marked 'activation fee'... so that's basically an extra $69, not an extra $33.

I bought the phone at an Apple store.

Not a big deal, I just thought someone might know off hand.

I misunderstood this with your original post.

The AppleCare extended warranty for the iPhone, which extends Apple's standard one year warranty by an additional year costs $69.

Did you request or approve purchasing the AppleCare extended warranty?

Depending on the AppleStore you visit, the sales associates can be pushy and casually mention a product or service and add it to your shopping cart.

When I purchased my Laptop, they tried to the same thing with me. When I saw the bill was 349 higher than it should have, I asked why and they casually said "AppleCare". I had told them I was not interested but they added it anyways.


In my case, I did not pay for AppleCare!

Just don't crack open the shrink wrap and return it.

I think your first bill includes one time activation fees (36) + data (30) + minutes depending on plan you choose. Of coarse you should have been pro-rated for the services provided to you all the day you have used iPhone. Even at Apple store they are usually very good about telling you how your monthly bill should look like.

As far as Apple care is concerned you will be happy if you Battery die or Touch Screen stop working after 1st year. I know if your iPod is lost or something and you still have Apple care on it, Apple refunds you the prorated cost so try that for iPhone if it works.

I am thinking, too, that your $69 went toward the Apple Care plan.

Regarding your first bill, it should break down like this:

$36 one-time activation fee
$39.99+ voice plan
$30 data plan
$0-$20 texting plan
+ taxes and fees.

In addition, on your first month's bill you will pay BOTH the prorated amount for the voice, data, and texting plans (plus taxes and fees) for the amount of each you used prior to the billing date, PLUS a full month's worth of charges for the month to come. In the future, your bills will be paid in advance of the services being used (with the exception of overage) and should go down significantly.

A lot of variables here but here's what I learned: I left my family on Verizon's Fam Plan and came over to AT&T Indiv Plan starting at 450 min and 200 txt msg's to stay in touch with my teen (total before tax, incl iPhone Data Plan, 200 txt = $75). So, my Verizon # ported over late afternoon of July 25... Earlier this week I received my 1st AT&T invoice for $142.72 with a statement date running from June 29 - July 28, at first-blush leaving me to think I was being charged that much for not even 3-Full Days??? I called AT&T for an explanation and learned that they "prorated" my charges for those 3-days ($4.00 for Data Plan; $5.33 for calling plan; $0.67 for Txt + taxes/fee's)... then Charged me for a month in advance for Svc's and those taxes and fee's... which came to the $142.72. Next months bill from July 29 - Aug 28 should be more realistic and in line with what I originally anticipated... Not unusual for wireless companies to charge a month in advance.

Is there any of you read the term of service (TOS). I found that for the data plan, ATT only allow us to use the data plan to download email, internet browsing, and corporate intranet. The one that made me wonder is the prohibition of use of the data plan. One of the major one is that the unlimited data plan cannot be used for uploading, downloading or streaming of video content (eg. movies, TV), music or games. This restirction will made the iphone totally useless piece of crap. Before I read it, I use the internet radio, watch youtube movie, vsnax, pandora, and etc over 3G. Is there any of you have trouble with ATT for using their data plan for streaming video content or music, and etc?
