Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Issues after new HD install, Tiger reinstall, Data Migration

Installed new HD on 12" PowerBook G4. Installed fresh Tiger. Used Migration Assistant with my old HD in an enclosure connected via firewire. No problems with migration.

Launched iPhoto, repeatedly crashed. Eventually it launched, states the number of photos in status bar, but only thumbnails display in certain view modes...or they would be there for a moment, then disappear. Where my photo would be displayed I could see the filename of the photo with a dashed box line above it.

Looked in my iPhoto Library folder in pictures and the original files seem to be there, but the preview on the right only shows JPEG title, not the picture itself (I think it used to show the actual picture in preview). Have to open the photo to actually see it. Not sure if this matters.

Read some threads and decided to try and rebuild. First chose the Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database - nothing really happened on the screen and still no pix. Quit and relaunched, this time picked the first rebuild option, Rebuild the Small Photos' Thumbnails. It started doing it, then iPhoto crashed again. Relaunched, and now there are no filenames under the dashed gray boxes where the photos should be. Currently still have the album titles.

Suggestions? Still have old HD in enclosure with entire database. Want a relatively smooth, clean fix so things get back to normal.

Please let me know if other details are needed.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth

The issue is with the Library, not the application, so I don't see what a re-install would achieve.

I guess that just comes from my old Windows IT days where if you found an App to be a little iffy, best to reinstall.

I did do a Repair Disk...launched iPhoto with Command-Option and picked to rebuild all selections. It was promising at first and progressed farther than ever, but crashed. I am going to copy/paste the report details that were displayed at the time of the crash (not pulled from the log) to see if that helps my online gurus. Only mentions QuickTime - went ahead and updated software for that.

I just keep wanting to try because I think it's interesting that my library and iPhoto seem fine when launched from my Ext HD that I just removed last week, but it keeps failing on my new Int HD.

That is exactly what is bothering me - now that you can mount the EHD have you tried copying it to your new HD and try using it with the iPhoto you installed there?

Also if you have not create a new test user and try it form there - that can show a problem with your original user sometimes

Kinda twilight zoney this morning (up at 5am)- b/c all seems to be working now. BTW, Good Morning to you!

So here's how it went down...

1) Able to mount EHD fine, so brought in another fresh copy of the library.
2) Ran Repair Disk (to help with my Picture Preview in Finder Column view problem). Result at that time - was only able to see one set of pictures correctly in the Preview column, the rest were just JPEG placeholder images. Again, not so important to us, but like to give details.
3) Launched iPhoto with Command-Option and selected all 4 Rebuild options.
4) Progressed for quite some time, then crashed. Report details pointed to a QuickTime line.
5) Searched forums relevant to QuickTime & iPhoto Crashing. Decided to do another check for Software Updates.
6) Software update had a few items, one of them a QuickT 7.5 upgrade. Ran that. Slept for a little while!
7) Just came back to computer and noticed that I can now Preview jpgs as pictures in the Preview Column and I launched iPhoto and it looks like everything is there. Can see full size images and thumbnails.

ugh, ugh.

So now, should I attempt a rebuild of the library again? Since it crashed the last time I ran it? I assume the issue had to do with some movie files I had in iPhoto - or can I assume that all is well? Does it hurt to do a rebuild of all 4 options when you don't really need it?

Thanks for not giving up on me.

Won't reply for a bit...baby is asleep and I gotta go shower while I can.

Thx again!

BACK UP THE WORKING LIBRARY!!!!!!!!!

rebuilding "should" never hurt - unless there is a glitch somewhere - software, power, hardware, etc

I like the thought of doing the backup right now and running for a few days with the working library -

Some final questions -

1) The way I have backed up in the past is just copying my home folder to my "storage" external HD (not the bootable one we have been talking about). I could make it a faster backup by copying my iPhoto Library folder there. But, is there anything else I should be doing for backup? (just talking about photos).

2) I want to finally mark this as solved, but can I give credit to you and TD? IF not, what's a fair decision? Want to stay on y'alls "good" user list! LOL

Thanks!

For backing up I use DejaVu which can do incremental back ups. In this scenario, the first time you back up the entire target is copied, thereafter the back up is updated with the changes. This is much faster than backing up the entire target each time. There are many, many other back up apps. Search on MacUpdate.

Give Larry the points. He's not as handsome as I and needs all the help he can get 😉

Actually TD is the smart one and I'm the handsome one 😉

My backup strategy is a bit different - I keep a bootable clone up to date daily using SuperDupper, use Old Toad's automator library6.iPhoto backup script often and once in a while make a copy (on the internal drive) on the entire iPhoto library -- and as soon as I convince my wife that I must have it I will add a terabyte time capsule and start Time Machine - plus every six months I use the MobileMe backup program to make a DVD backup (that is getting darn big so may discontinue that one or find a different way)

Thank you both for giving advice on back-up strategies that are simpler than my current routine.

Thank you both for working with me on this issue.

Marked Larry's last message as "solved" although the solution is spread throughout the topic.

And, finally, thank goodness I don't have to split my looks or smarts with ya! And I am from the Alabama, so I'm beauty, brains and a belle. (Insert laugh here).

Thanks,
Elizabeth
