Iphone 3G no service

Hi all, I got my iphone 3G, registered with itunes and right away the phone worked, it worked all day perfectly. while driving home i noticed i had 'no service' - i restored from itunes, installed update 2.0.1 and called my phone company 02.

Can anyone give me any ideas as to why this would happen? Could the phones IMEI be blocked ?

i've had the same problem with my o2 iphone 3g :

after finally getting through to o2 support in the late afternoon (tip - dont try calling the morning - i was on hold for 30 minutes before i gave up) a friendly younge lady answered my call and helpfully found the problem was with my o2 account. The phone was working again withing 5 mins, ironically my 3G reception is not stronger, i get another two bars at home.

Compensation was not offered however after i requested it i was offered another 60 minutes this month.

Same thing happened to me last night... I live in NYC and the 3g has been pretty terrible anyways, but now when I switch to 3g, it says "No service" and won't flop back to EDGE. The only way to get the phone to work is to manually put it on EDGE... Defective... I'll take it back with my recalled power adapter.. I am so tired of this phone.

i had a similar problem and just got a replacement 3G today...

when my iPhone would switch to EDGE from 3G, the transition would be smooth, no problems there. but when i got back into a 3G area my phone wouldn't switch back. this would happen everyday because i work right on the fringe where a 3G area meets an EDGE area. if i would try turning airplane mode on and then off to try and get it to see 3G, it would just endlessly search. if i tried to toggle the 3G switch, i'd get No Service. sometimes, after 30 minutes or more it would come back, but usually i would have to do a hard reset.

i tried all possible troubleshooting and nothing worked, so Apple swapped me out.

That's interesting because there was some thread from a while back talking about how someone in Europe crossed borders and his phone couldn't find his home carrier when he got back into the country. I wonder if some of the problems people have in the States are because AT&T actually runs what were mix of different networks (i.e. cingular vs att).

Jawatkin and Shaps24...I'm so glad I read your posts...finally...I've been going crazy ALL day with this. This past Sunday in the afternoon I was in my house in Fort Lee, NJ (Right under the GW Bridge) and noticed that SAME problem. No service with 3g but had to manually turn it off to get it to work. Called ATT, the first woman said there were probs, but i didn't trust her so i called back and second guy said no probs with service and that I shoudl go to apple. All day I tried to fix it and nothing worked...I took a friends iphone (same make and firmware) and he had full 3g service. Couldn't get time with the Genius Bars at any of the City Apple stores, so I went to Apple in Paramus, NJ..and as soon as I walked in...voila...3g started working. It has to be something to do with coverage around the city and maybe out sims? Email me if you get an update!

There's definately something going on in the New York City area because as I mentioned above...much like the two before me...all of a sudden (right around the same time they mentioned it happened to them) I get "no service" on 3G but it won't automatically switch to Edge...I have to manually turn 3G off. My neighbor at work has the same phone and firmware and he has great service, but when I went out into NJ a bit, 3G came right back. Somethings fishy...maybe certain Sims need to be updated??
