Windows fails shutdown with iTunes open

When I try to shutdown my computer the shutdown is interrupted by iTunes, and I'm forced to hit shutdown again. Is there any other work around for this than manually shutting down iTunes first?

In Windows XP Home Ed. try

Right click your iTunes icon.
Select Properties
Select the 3rd Tab: Compatibility.

Check The Run this program in compatibility mode for box.

Select: Windows 2000 from the list of compatibility choices.

Make sure All the 'lowered' Display settings are unchecked.
(No check mark in Run in 256 colors,
no check mark in Run in 640x480,
no check mark in Disable visual themes.)

it seems to hang less often when I did this, but
it still is not running perfect yet, and it still will not
unload from memory, even when it 'looks' like it exited
normally.

I have the same problem in Windows XP,
itunes.exe will not End-Process, and it always pops up a
End-Now box when I am shutting down windows,
even if I File/Exit iTunes and the window is gone, it still is sitting in memory doing nothing (when viewed through alt-ctrl-del Task Manager.)

I wish Apple would post a link to the old iTunes so I could roll back to vr. 4 or 5 and get it working ok again.

I hope they can get iTunes 6.1 out before they start selling the Video iPod. I can imagine a bunch of angry new iPod owners returning their purchases and demanding their old iPods back!

I was planning on buying a 60GB Video iPod, but these problems with iTunes have convinced me to wait and see
until they can get the whole package working flawlessly again. Video is a big jump, I know Apple will do it right, eventually.

Apple is good at fixing problems, but I would rather skip over the 'learning curve' and get the bug free iPod version later.

It's worth the wait...

Ok, I should have seen that, good catch.
I remember iTunes is QuickTime based, or something like that...

I Made the same changes to QuickTime 7.0.3,
it now is set to start in compatability mode,
Windows 2000, with no other options checked, as above.

Windows XP Home Edition (Fully Microsoft Updated with all Patches) now DOES shut down properly. Shut down seems to take almost a full minute longer than before iTunes 6.

I am glad to be an Apple Beta Tester, I just wish they would have told me I was one! 😉

iTunes 6 STILL does not run 100% correctly though,
it Still acts like a TSR, opening the first time,
but not working the second time. Buying songs and videos works, I tested it with a few of each. Burning worked, but my DVD player can't read .m4v video files.

iTunes still does not like getting cut off from the internet by my paranoid android firewall settings...
it hangs and dies. With a wireless laptop I am Off the internet more than On, so that's a problem.

And iTunes.exe still will not End Process and it still will not End Process Tree in Windows Task Manager. It stays in RAM until shutdown, but at least now I don't have to power down the computer to get it to turn off.

I hope they can get these details worked out in iTunes and update the Mac Mini and OS X so I can put one under my Big TV for Christmas. I want Apple to upgrade the Mac Mini for HDTV use, but if not I'll just get the Buffalo Technology LinkTheater Hi-Def MediaPlayer (PC-P3LWG/DVD) and build my own windows solution with an old laptop.

Thanks again for your insightful comment! 🙂

Summary Workaround for Windows XP Home shutdown problem:

In Windows XP Home Edition try:

1. Right click your iTunes icon.
2. Select Properties
3. Select the 3rd Tab to the right: Compatibility.

4. Check The Run this program in compatibility mode for box.

Select: Windows 2000 from the list of compatibility choices.

5. Make sure All the 'lowered' Display settings are unchecked.
(No check mark in Run in 256 colors,
no check mark in Run in 640x480,
no check mark in Disable visual themes,
no check mark in Turn off advanced text services... )

6. Click Apply and click OK to save those settings.

7. Now find your Start/All Programs/QuickTime/QuickTime Player and right click on it.
Select properties and the Compatability tab and repeat the same Windows 2000 settings as above. Click Apply and Ok to save those settings to QuickTime.

Running Both QuickTime and iTunes 6 in Windows 2000 compatability mode now shuts down my Windows XP Home Ed wireless laptop correctly.

Try that and let me know if it helps solve your Windows XP shutdown problem.

hi Christopher!

🙂 you're the man with the good pair of hands. would never have thought about the QT if you hadn't have spotted the compatibility settings in itunes ...

iTunes 6 STILL does not run 100% correctly though,

it Still acts like a TSR, opening the first time,
but not working the second time.

hmmmm. that's probably the "stuck" itunes.exe process. i've seen that before. if you've got one running, it'll suppress the itunes launch.

but even though shutting that process down in task manager will (should) get your itunes launching the second time, that's not an especially satisfactory state of affairs.

some other basic research ... what security software are you running? it's not Norton Internet Security 2005, is it?

love, b

Exactly same problem as Christopher was explaining. Still not working 100% after the workaround but at least it shuts down. it's still slow to respond to a mouse command. I'd double-click on another song and it takes 5 seconds to react and start playing the new song. Overall, it's not workable this way.

Running Windows firewall only, besides my router (d-link gaming something) and I'm using McAfee managed virusScan. Interesting thing maybe, Chris was mentioning he is working on a laptop and I am too. I run an HP Compaq NC 6000.
