Multiple copies of email sent (2.0 Activesync account)

I have a user that has updated his iPhone to 2.0 software and we've set him up with an Exchange Activesync account.

Unfortunately he is having a sporadic issue where he'll send a message, or accept a meeting request, and his iPhone sends the message out multiple times. This has happened twice so far. The first time I have no data for besides the knowledge that it was a meeting request (a really old one) that was popping up after we set him up (probably an old request that he never replied to), so he accepted it to clear it out and it sent the notice out multiple times.

Last night however he forwarded a message to his supervisor and it sent it 5 times. When I checked the messages on the server each message had a unique message ID on it, so I figured it was the phone actually sending the message. After checking his Sent Items this was confirmed, and the message was indeed sent multiple times.

The interesting thing is that so far this has only happened when sending mail to one individual--his supervisor. It does not however do it every time he sends mail to him.

What sort of thing could cause this behavior? It doesn't happen when he's using his installation of Outlook. It's making him afraid to send emails using his iPhone, particularly because his supervisor isn't happy that he has one. 🙂

All four of our iPhone pilot users have experienced this problem at some time. From what I've been able to determine so far:

+ It seems to happen when there's a slightly shaky data connection - we've never seen it on a WiFi connection, or where the phone is stationary with good signal. It frequently happens to me when I'm sending mails on a moving train.

+ Once a message has come back with the "Failed to send" error, the iPhone will keep retrying, but will invariably fail even if it's got perfect GPRS/EDGE/3G signal. The thing is, even though you've been told there was an error, the message has actually been sent already - but it sticks in the Outbox and keeps trying as though it hasn't. It's not until the phone either docks or gets back onto a WiFi network that the message sends one more time and the problem clears.

+ It feels like a problem in the processing of the ActiveSync "OK" acknowledgement during sending - something gets out of line in the iPhone, maybe it misses the ACK because of poor data signal, but then it's stuck.

+ There's no obvious connection to firmware version. We've seen this on everything from 2.0 up to 2.1.

This is a real problem - and it's absolutely stopping us from letting any "real" users use iPhones through Exchange. Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions?

Apple? Any new firmware forthcoming to fix this bug?

Thanks.

We are seeing the same thing here as well. 5 of us got the iPhone on the same day and all are upgraded to the latest 2.1 firmware. About one week ago we started noticing mail going out a little slower than normal. One user's phone is incessantly forwarding the same meeting acceptance every few hours. My phone will send the same message to someone three to five times and it is taking longer and longer to get messages. Often times I have to delete a message manually from the Outbox. Another user's messages gets sent 2 to 6 times but not every email he sends from the iPhone. Another user has no problems whatsoever. We are all on the AT&T network. I have tried restoring to factory, restoring last backup, deleting all mail accounts and then resetting network settings. Nothing has worked thus far. I hope that someone can help

I have not come across this problem with any of my users yet, however i would like to see a cause and solution incase this does become a problem.

If it were just the mail causing the problem I would think it may have somthing to do with other email account settings. (wrong default?) The meeting invitation acceptions would only use active sync though.

What kind if any errors are showing up in your exchange event logs?

I have been having this problem myself when connected to an exchange server. I have had 2 occasions where the same email has been sent over 8 times. Both times I had to remove all my email settings and add them again to get it to stop. I have the 8G 3G iPhone.
I also support about 40 iPhone users in a law firm and 4 or 5 of them are having the same issue. They are connecting to a different exchange server.
My theory is that it happens when there is poor 3G or 2G coverage or the phone is switching between towers and gets "stuck". The problem is worse for these people because there is a dead spot in the building that they are based where the "sphere" of coverage between two 3G towers are intersecting. This problem has been proven by Vodafone NZ but they won't fix it.

Has anyone had any luck resolving this yet?

i'm having the same trouble with all of the iphones connected to our exchange 2007 sp1 server. typically it happens with photo attachments. the recipient sees most of the picture, but it will not fully load. i have posted a picture as an example here:

it seems that the initial transmission fails, the server proceeds to send the information it has received anyway; while the phone continues to retransmit until the entire attachment has transferred.

so, technically, it appears to be a server issue. i wonder what could be changed, server side, that would stop this from happening?

expect this problem to happen (occasionally) when sending emails from your iphone with attachments, when connected to GPRS/EDGE/3G, when you have poor wifi signal, when internet access is slow, when the moon is full, etc.
I wonder if the problem is Apple's implementation of Microsoft's technology? Wouldn't you think that these two rivals (bitter?) would work together to sell more (microsoft exchange services, apple iphones)? Funny.

this also happens with my Yahoo account setup on an iphone 3g with latest firmware. as others have mentioned, it's probably due to non-stable data connection. however, i've used at least 3 other non-apple phones in the past with email capability and this has never occurred. seems to me this is a bug apple could fix. i just wanna stop getting "DUDE. I GET IT! NO NEED TO EMAIL ME 5 TIMES!" replies from my friends...

This has happened to me before when someone tried to send me a voice memo, but it only sent me about 5 copies of the email. I figured that maybe the email didn't send at first, so they tried to resend it. The other day, however, someone sent me a voice memo and I have since received over 350 copies of the same email.

Hi everyone... having what appears to be the exact same issue. Have a user who has both an iPhone and uses Entourage as his email client on his MAC. When he deletes a meeting request (so far only from one user (Our CEO)) it generates emails to everyone on the meeting request multiple times. Even if he whacks the meeting request from either Entourage or Outlook Web Access it does the same thing, generates all these emails. The only thing he mentioned was that it started a few days after he setup his iPhone to receive our company emails.

This is killin' us as folks are starting to get a little tired of getting all these duplicate emails. So far only happens on meeting requests though...
