For those of you with cracks in the plastic..

I just got my new 16gb phone, and after reading about the cracks in some people's cases, I checked my new phone for hairline cracks. So far, my black phone is free of these cracks. But, I was wondering if the cracks are caused by placing the phone near a window in the sun? I am not sure if anyone has brought this up before, but maybe placing the phone in the sun can expand the metal bezel enough to cause stress cracks on the plastic back...just my thoughts...

My 2nd 16 GB Black 3G was "nearly perfect" when I opened it up. Its never seen the sun, any temperature extremes other than my desk (72 deg) or pocket (85 deg?), and has never been subject to any vibration or mechanical shock of any sort. Yet, after 4 weeks its now full of hairline cracks and chips around the cut-outs for switches and ports.

Thanks for the feedback. The cracks that I see on the internet appears to be expansion cracks, so either the plastic is shrinking at a different rate than the bezel, or the bezel is xpanding at a different rate. All the cracks seem to be near the metal parts. That's why I was thinking that maybe it had to do with exposure to the hot summer sun. In any case, it is a design flaw from the designers. These things are hard to predict until they happen.

The cracks on mine are not associated with the metal bezel. Its hard to tell, but they appear to be in a clear coating that is part of the plastic shell. Its possible the coating material and the plastic shell itself have differing coefficients of expansion that are significant enough to cause the coating to crack under either tension or compression.

Are you experiencing some pieces blowing off? I would imagine that the plastic shell is made up of a single plastic - I can't see a coating on there. Maybe it's cracking during the manufacturing process as it cools out of the mould? It's hard to say. If you are experiencing cracks away from the metal components, I am not sure what else could be causing this. Either way, this plastic seems to be quite brittle in order to keep it from scratching easily. Do you know if hardeners are used in the plastic mix?
