IPOD Classic immediately and automatically disconnects !!

OK this has to be some crap on Apples side, doesn't it? This unit was working fine just 2 days ago and I have done nothing to this computer or the IPOD.I plug it in and it automatically ejects it. I can not access my IPOD classic with my mac nor can I charge it. Way screwed up man. It was asking me to update it for some time now but I did not because others in this forum were having problems with the update and many said to avoid it. I have done nothing since the last time I used it. What on earth could cause this and how can I get my IPOD back W/O having to reset and lose everything.

I first had this problem when I connected the iPod to my PC at work. It's an older Windows 2000 system. I can now use the disk function on this machine. No iTunes program is loaded because it's a pre-XP SP2 system. At the time, I connected it with a cable that came with a Nano. I don't know if this is relevant. It doesn't appear to be windows related but it could generate one because the iPod disconnects while the driver is installing. It was difficult for me to remove the driver that windows installed for the iPod because device manager doesn't show this driver or device being connected. Device manager shows only the connected devices and the iPod ejects before the tree has a chance to update. I advise having Device Manager opened while the iPod is being plugged in. This allowed me to catch the (USB Mass storage device) and remove it. I was eventually able to get the iPod connected by performing a reset (select + Menu for 6-seconds) on the iPod while it was connected to the PC. It seems this needs to be done every time the iPod is connected. Several reset attempts failed when they were done while it wasn't connected.
Connect the iPod, wait for it to eject itself, Windows will complain of an unsafe ejection, then perform the iPod reset. This at least got me connected for disk use which is all I wanted to do here. I would also like to note that the charging function was never a problem for me. It worked with either cable and after ejecting.
Good Luck!!

I had the same immediate eject problem. I went to the Apple iPod support site and looked at the 5 'R's they have there. The second one was "*Retry your iPod with a different USB port on your computer, not a USB port on your keyboard or hub.*" I did that and suddenly my iPod works like new - no more ejects! It's worth a try, you won't get an easier or cheaper solution ...

I've had the same exact problem with my 80 gig classic, being a custom made computer i have 4 sets of USB ports all updated and switched through all of them, still syncs then disconnects. I have been through the 5 R's numerous times and sync'd it with my sister's computer and it worked. In disk mode, still disconnects, new itunes is installed and fully updated, all the songs off various sites have been scanned for viruses and malware. All my internet is updated and one night when it acutally sync'd i restored to factory and then it wouldn't sync music to it, very frustrating, need help PLEASE, worked a whole summer on construction with dad and paid a hard earned $250 for this, seems Apple is too busy to help though.

This just happened to me and it's extremely frustrating, i'm glad i found this forum because it proved to be very helpful. The thing that worked for me was plugging the usb cord directly into the computer and not into a hub. Easily solved but the problem is that the new Imac design has the USB port in the back, which makes it really inconvenient to use just for an ipod. The other problem i experienced was that it made my computer run really slowly, but besides that it worked.
