Problem With Outlook PST FIle - Possibly iTunes Related

Hello All...

I have read a few threads on here about problems related to iTunes and Outlook with regards to contacts and calendar entries, but, so far, I have not seen a post which covers my problem exactly. Apologies though if my problem has been addressed already on this forum somewhere before.

At the moment I am running iTunes version 7.7.0.43 and Outlook 2007 and I recently begun to have problems with my Outlook PST file right around the same time I installed iTunes it seems. I can't remember exactly when the problems started, but the problems never occurred over the many years I have been using the same Outlook PST file and so that is why I believe the problems that started recently started occurring around the same time when I setup iTunes to sync my Outlook contacts with my iPhone.

My Outlook file still more or less functions normally most of the time, but almost every time I open Outlook I get an error message telling me that the Outlook file was not closed properly the last time it was used and it must be checked for errors. It then does the check, which often takes about 20 minutes while running the check in the background, but each time it finds no errors.

I have since run Scanpst.exe a few times and it seems to have found some errors and corrected them, but not solved the problem of Outlook checking the file for errors all the time.

My PST file is only around 300MB at this point. I had discovered last night it was around 1.5GB, but I did a major cleanup on it in the last 24 hours and now it is only 300MB as I mentioned.

At this point I have disabled iTunes from being able to sync with my Outlook contacts any longer, and I have also disabled the Apple iTunes add-in for Outlook within Outlook.

Besides the constant checking of the PST files for errors, iTunes added a bunch cell phone number contacts from my iPhone, which now appear in my Outlook address book as dead entries. I have tried to both access, open, and/or delete these contacts and it just won’t let me. If I try to open or edit them I get that invalid ENTRYID error message. If I try to delete them they just remain there and are never deleted.

Any ideas on how I can fix the problem so that Outlook stops checking the Outlook file for errors, and more importantly, how I can delete those invalid entries from my contacts, would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Marc

Thank you Alan, I haven't done that, but I created a backup of the PST file first, then exported just the contacts out to an Excel file, and then imported the contacts back in using the options to replace any duplicate entries with the newly imported entries and I have managed to get rid of all those messed up cell phone entries that came from my iPhone. So that is one step in the right direction. I still need to reboot to see if it has fixed the file checking problem as well.

Do you still think doing what you sugessted would be a good idea at this point?

Also, I am wondering how I can avoid this problem happening again with iTunes if I let it start syncing with Outlook again?

If I were you, I would create a new .pst file. 300 mb is not a large file at all, it is corrupted. Whatever is corrupted in the file will not copy over into the new file, it should be fine after that. Corruption can get into .pst files and now show any sign until you need to copy, move or add to the file. Once a file becomes corrupted even using scanpst.exe will not fix the problem, it will locate some or most of the errors, it cannot prevent new errors. Believe me, creating a new file will save you time and the headache later!

Good luck.

I have now rebooted and still am getting the file needs to be checked for errors message. So good chance the file is partially corrupted in some way as you say.

If I were going to create a new file from the existing file would the steps be as follows?

1 - File, Import Export
2 - Export to a file
3 - personal Folder File (.pst)
4 - Click on the Root Folder at the top of the list of folders provided and click on the dialogue box which says Include subfolders
5 - Name the file
6 - Select "Replace duplicates with items exported"
7 - Click finish

I am having this same error: " A data file did not close properly the last time it was used and is being checked for problems." -- none of my "pst's" have had any issues and none have been imports from a prior outlook version

This is occuring on two installations of vista (64 and 32bit) full service packs, itunes 8. I dont see one specific answer

what I have done is disable the iTunes plug-in for outlook exit outlook and run the scanpst.
Scanpst "fixes" some errors and then I restart outlook. None of these error messages come up no matter
How many times I exit / launch outlook. I re-enable the plug-in exit outlook and relaunch. I exit and BAM the corrupt message is back.

The iTunes plug-in is the cause.

Same issue. Windows Vista SP1 32 bit, Outlook 2007 SP2, iTunes 8.0.2, iPod Touch swv 2.2.

When iTunes syncs with Outlook, the next time I open Outlook I get the error, "A data file did not close properly the last time it was used and is being checked for problems."

No Outlook issues until I started sync-ing with iTunes for calendar and contacts.

I am having the same problems since installing itunes on my laptop with Outlook 2007 showing error messages and not closing properly.

I have tried various suggestions i.e disabling itunes add-ins within Outlook2007, exporting pst files etc but the errors still keep coming whenever I try to sync with iphone via itunes.

I have been unable to sync contacts or calender with Outlook 2007 and iphone either.

I am a new iphone user and would like to sync my iphone with outlook via itunes but cannot find any easy answers within this forum (yet).

I apologise for answering your question with another question but I'm hoping that someone could give me some easy step by step instructions on how these problems could be solved.

I'm very confused !!!

Best regards & Happy New Year

Charley
