Deleting Songs From Smart Playlist?

Hello,

How do I delete a song from my library if I'm listening to a smart playlist? Whenever I run across a song I don't like in my smart playlist, I have to go back to the library to delete the song, which is quite tedious. I think if you press alt-delete in a regular playlist, this works, but not for smart playlists.

Any suggestions?

There is no delete option in smart playlists.

A possible work around is to make a regular playlist called "For deletion", or whatever you like.

Then if you are listening to a track on a smart play list that you don't like, right click and select Add to Playlist - chose your "for deletion" playlist.

Then at the end of your session you can go to your "for deletion" playlist and delete the tracks.

You could use the rating parameter set so that if you give a track only one star it's not showing in the smart playlist, or you could for eg. use the genre parameter as well, or add a word to the comment field that excludes that track from your smart playlist, something like this:

Match all the following rules:
genre is rock
genre is pop
rating is not (1 star) / genre is not (crap) / comment doesn't include ('crap')

This doesn't delete anything from the library, just excludes them from the playlist. You could use for eg. the word 'delete' in the comment field and later search all of them in the whole library and delete them if that's what you want.

Is this anything you're after? Does it work the same way on Windows?

Ville's suggestion is a good one. Pick a rating for songs you don't want anymore. One-star like his example. Your Smart Playlist will add a rule to EXCLUDE one-star rated songs. So when you tag the song with one star, it will be removed from the playlist automatically.
To add to Ville's suggestion. Create a second playlist and call it "Delete from Library" and make the rule any songs with one star. Now when you tag a song on the iPod with one star, not only will it be removed from the playlist, but it will automatically go into your "Delete From Library" playlist so when you sync to your computer, you have a nice list of the stuff you want to delete from your library.
Cheers,
Patrick

Perhaps we are confusing being able to delete a song from a Smart Playlist vs. being able to delete it completely from the library via the SPL. The first one, if live updating is checked won't work because the rule will keep it in the playlist. But Option-deleting it (on a Mac at least) will remove it from the library completely so is removed from the SPL as well.
