Leopard, firewall, ethernet port - ATV appears in iTunes but will not sync

Additional information: Apple TV connected via ethernet; shows in iTunes; can reach YouTube; set to sync either Automatic or Custom; firewall either off or set to allow iTunes connections. Click "Sync".

Error message: "The Apple TV is not responding. Check to see that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."

(Note: I do not see how under Leopard to open or close specific ports directly (without using Terminal or some third party utility) as was possible under Tiger, and as Apple's help articles still blindly suggest.)

Network Utility port scan reads "Open TCP Port: 3689 daap
Port Scan has completed ..."

"daap" ! Yeah, what he said. But I don't know what it means.

The ATV used to sync. No change to network.
I've tried resetting the ATV, turning it off and on, repairing permissions, blah, blah, blah.

The ATV is supposed to be an appliance: you turn it on and it works. (Not even an on-off switch.) Instead it's turning into another techno-project.

Oddly enough, I can now synch my ATV with my iTunes on my PC without any synch errors...The crazy thing is that I didn't do anything to fix it yet...?

I'm not complaining but just wish I was able to offer some help to others.

I will watch over the next few weeks and see what happens and report back any significant findings.

When I read the title of this thread, I felt A strange sense of jubilation and belonging. Apple had just about convinced me that I was the only person in the world experiencing this syncing problem. To be fair, I have had the ATV about 6 weeks. Straight out of the box, it worked fine although I had to go through several attempts switching many household appliances of in between times and letting 'the poor white box' rest between attempts. Eventually, it did start to behave and I went to bed and let the ATV upload - job done in the morning. Six weeks passed without incident - then all of asudden last night, ATV dropped out of sync, became invisible on my devise list and ditched 80Gb of media! I was once again faced with the task of uploading. This time however, I got as far as getting ATV to appear in iTunes, to contact iTunes store and authorize - it synced about 11 photographs and then Port 3689. I tried every bit of voodoo in this thread, but no joy. What I really cant understand is why my ATV has worked up to this moment in time but now seems to have gone into early retirement.

Just for a laugh, I did upload all material back to ATV by dragging my iMac upstairs and ethernet'ing it directly to the ATV. It uploaded in a very short order (40 mins). The iMac is back down stairs, ATV is working fine, though the more passes, the more out of sync the aspects of the library are going to become. But it provides me with an interim solution while I sharpen my tongue for ANOTHER 'irrate of' call to Apple.

I have had the same problem (see previous post) but I have to say that a call to Apple resolved it. It was a port 3689 issue but not firewall related. The router's security settings were blocking the syncing (sometimes). I changed the security setting from WPA-PSK to disable; the downside is that my LAN is open to others who want to piggy back onto it. That's ok for me though as I lived in an isolated location and my neighbours are all octogenarians who don't use computers of any variety. The upside is that everything now works fine - again!
