Unsupported Image Format Error- Damaged files???

I have been working a series of pictures (all .jpg) and doing some editing. Pictures were fine.
I went back in today and a fair number of pictures are now indicating unsupported image format and just show red. I can see the image in the thumbnail and briefly if I press "M" or click on the red background. The image will flash and then go back to the red-background with "unsupported image format" message.

What happened?
Can I get back to the Master somehow and save the image?
Are there certain edits you shouldn't try in a .jpg (vs. RAW) file??
I am afraid to do more work on the pictures for fear of damaging more files.

Thanks.

Hi Pittsburgh,
I don't have a quick fix except to go and find the master file. If you're using a referenced file, this should be easy enough; just navigate to the place you're storing all the masters. If you're storing all your master files in your Aperture library, this can be opened by right-clicking the library icon, and selecting "Show package contents". You might need to do this 3 or 4 times to navigate through the library, folders, projects and import groups etc, but it is possible to dig right down to the originals.

Once you've found the original file, how does it look? Can you open it with other apps? (Be careful not to save any changes to this file). Is the file there?

If you can answer this question, you'll give us more info to work with and a better chance at resolving your problem.

Of course you could look up this problem in your manual, or Time Machine back a while and restore either file or the project. But these are last ditch efforts (the manual especially 😉

I've been getting this message also, when editing photo's in an external editor (PhotoShop CS3). This error is random, can be fixed by going back to the master and/or saving a separate file from the external application and than importing back into aperture. But this is annoying and frustrating. Considering dumping aperature and moving to Adobe's competitive application (LightRoom)...

Sorry Apple, but have to get work done, and this error with aperature is starting to cost me in terms of time.

Right now i seem to have fixed this (for now) so now ive stopped tearing my hair out heres what happened.

Yesterday i wanted to delete one photo, but by accident deleted a whole project (it went to the trash). Unfortunately you cant just restore a project so i decided that my nice shiny timecapsule would come in handy (having spent a lot of money on it) Anyway i restored and looked at a few photos and thought phew my project was back. Looked at the project today and got the dreaded message. Decided to restore a different backup and hey presto its back and working correctly (again, for now)

Ive submitted a bug fix to apple as well, i think this one certainly needs to be escalated and resolved ASAP, like others if its not soon, i'll be spending a small fortune and getting Lightroom, but the money will be worth the peace of mind. I'll also be asking for a refund on Aperture given that it doesnt work as intended!

Apple please fix thisas so far i prefer Aperture over Lightroom (ex PC user)

yes, you should in theory always get the master file from the library... or because I don't trust computer applications.. I always save my original raw files separately (backed up). Hence, I'm always able to find the file to fix (basically means starting over, a huge waste of time)

Also I believe I've found the issue for myself when using an external editor.. photoshop CS3 allows 16 bits/channel and I've been shooting with the Nikon D300, saving in raw 12/14 bits (the NEF format). If I don't do layers in CS3, everything works nice.. but if I add text for example as a copyright label and save, aperature is randomly unhappy. In CS3, if I change to 8 bits/channel before adding layers and/or doing edits, all is appearing to be working...

Unless Apple does and or tells us something. I'm probably going to still switch to the adobe application just because I don't have time to be a free troubleshooter right now..

When I got to my Project in Aperture through the Aperture Library in pictures it would not give me an option to "Show Package Contents". I then realized that I imported these from iPhoto. So I went to iPhoto and the pictures are viewable there. The iPhoto library is arranged differently in the iPhoto library by year. So much more difficult to find the Master files there. The library does not reference Album I created in iPhoto to capture the pictures I wanted to import into Aperture where I created a project.

So do I re-import the pictures from iPhoto to Aperture that are messed up and start over?
When importing from iPhoto does that mean the Master is not located within Aperture but rather in iPhoto???

Thanks for the help.

I just imported a shoot I just did and all of the pictures are saying "unsupported image format". I was previewing everything on the camera LCD just before I ejected the card from my Canon 5D and they were all fine. I put the card in my reader, imported them and ejected the card after they were done. I didn't erase any of them. When I saw that they were all giving the error message I put the card back in the camera and it said the same thing on the camera LCD... or something similar. I know that they were all fine when I put the card in the reader to import them into Aperture, but it seems that they have somehow been corrupted. Is there anything that I can do to salvage these photos? Otherwise I am going to have to reshoot the entire thing. 😟

Is it Aperture that corrupted the photos? They were fine until I started the import. I previewed them several times while the card was still in the camera.

Thanks,

David

Dave,

I'm sure something else happened, in that most applications that import files from memory cards, cameras, etc.. only copy the data, and some will give you the option of deleting from the source for convenience. In your case, the only possible issue that comes to mind is the data was removed and than copied back to the memory card. Which is NOT something that any application does to my knowledge.

Maybe in the future, use the basic finder commands (ie, copy) to move your data to a back-up source before you use any application to look at the files.

For the corrupted files, try moving the files to your computer directly, and than looking at them with a different application, like preview or something. Also Graphic Converter is a good application, and it complements many of the more expensive applications nicely.

I posted this to an earlier post and got no reply so I am adding it to the bottom of the list to see if I can get some help to my original post...
