Unsupported Image Format Error- Damaged files???

Aperture does modify files on memory cards, if you try to import them directly into Aperture first. Import your JPG or RAW files directly into a drive folder before attempting to use them in CS3 or Aperture. The results of my shoots are critical to my business, I cannot go back a re-shoot 90% of my commercial photo shoots. I not only copy original files to a folder but I also back up that folder before using copies of the files in any application. Old habits die hard. The Master file feature in Aperture is too mysterious to trust my primary source of income to at this point in time.

I just imported a group of pictures from my camera. All of the JPG images came through fine, but all the RAW images give a short glimps of picture, but then the Unsupported Image Format error comes up.

I get the same problem with anything image not shot in 4.3 aspect. The images are still on the camera but Aperture 2 shows them as unsupported, its a leica Digilux 3.

I'm having the same problems. I just purchased Aperture and tried uploading my pictures directly from my camera (Canon EOS Rebel XSi), and all of my JPGs came over fine. Only my Raw+JPGs came over as "Unsupported Image Format" - just as everyone says above.

thwphotos, does this mean that I need to first load all my pictures onto my hard drive, and THEN load them into Aperture?

Some files have suddenly started producing "unsupported image format" although they were ok when originally imported. Thumbs nails are ok so its difficult to detect which files are corrupt. The best way is when using vault it then lists all the files that are corrupt (its a shame vault doesnt keep the log file somewhere to get all the details but thats another matter).
A fix ? well I use a nikon D70 and also Nikon capture software. If you export the corrupt masters out of aperture and open in Nikon Capture and make a slight adjustment and re-save and re-import back into Aperture it will no longer be corrupted. Not ideal but it may get someone out of a bad situation.

We are also having this problem. We Tether our Nikon D200 directly to Aperture, so there isn't a source for original images to go back to. Typically, we shoot so many images that from time to time we have to clear the memory card in the camera, so we can't use that as the source for corrupt images either.

Is there a way to save these images, or are they just garbage?

Just been having this problem with about 30 photos out of a 600 photo project. After restarting Aperture the problem disappeared. According to my other half she has seen this happen many times and restarting always fixes it.

Hi Had the same problem as a few people have described - this worked for me and got my photo's back -

in View

select - Browser and Viewer

select - Quick preview

select - Inspector - Projects

when I did this all the files that were reporting "unsupported format" came back to life

it looks as if its some conflict between - Proofing Profile / Onscreen proofing and Inspector

when I choose either of the proofing options I get the Unsupported format error (but not on every photo) - but if I go back and select what I've described above, I get my photo's back

I've done this a few times to verify and can repeat the errors and get rid of them - It could be as simple as being in proofing mode by mistake

my photo's were all in a project folder - this also maybe relevant to the how I got them back

- i.e. selecting - Inspector - Projects

I'm suddenly getting the 'unsupported image format' error, after two years of using Aperture with same camera, same workflow, and no problems.

Just using JPEG and an original Canon digital Rebel so no new format involved.

Seems intermittent. Just loaded 12 photos and 2 show the error while the rest are fine. If I restart and reload the photos, the ones showing the error previously will sometimes load fine.... but then others will show the error that previously didn't.

None of the photos involve importing from other software. or editing in an external editor. Switching viewing mode to 'Quick Preview' does remove the error message, but leaves a very blurry image that is unworkable. Trying to bring up a new version from the master brings up a blank.

Tried solving the problem by reload Aperture and it's updates, but still having the problem.

Please help! It's making working with Aperture, which has previously been no problem, impossible. Only thing I can think of is some kind of issue occurring during the import process the is corrupting the master.

Any thoughts?

Similar thing happening with me with Aperture 2.1.2. I am getting infrequent 'unsupported image format' errors. I'm using a new Pentax K-m/K-2000 body. Most of the RAW images import correctly. Typically, there will be 3 or 4 that do not. Adobe DNG processes these correctly, but that adds a bit complication to the workflow to say the least. Have never had a problem with images from other bodies - Pentax K10D, K100DS, or Olympus e-520.

I've tried restarting, repairing permissions, rebuilding the library - nothing helps.

I Use Canon 350 and 1000D in Raw format with Aperture 2.1.2. Had upgraded to Leopard 10.5.4 only yesterday thinking it would resolve situation but found exactly the same red screen format message.

I have the same problem but none of the possible solutions suggested here and elsewhere have any effect in correcting it.

I have one project, for example, which has 96 images in. Of those, 26 are now maroon boxes saying "Unsupported Image Format". All 96 were shot on the same camera (a Nikon D3 if it is relevant) within hours of one another in November last year. Until last week, all 96 had been displayed, edited and so on several times over with no issue.

I have quit and re-started Aperture, rebuilt the library, rebuilt previews, rebuilt thumbnails and so on - all to no avail.

To be honest, as a professional photographer, I cannot tolerate software that is this unreliable with my clients' images and I am trialling Adobe Lightroom as a possible replacement if I cannot resolve this soon.

I also have this problem when editing my RAW files. They are all fine and then suddenly they are "unsupported file". I quit and then reload and everything works fine until this happens again. I'll try this suggestion and get back with you. This only began happening with me about 1 month ago. I've used Aperture for 2 years.

FWIW, I'll add my experience with this annoying bug.

For me, the dreaded "Unsupported Image Format" red error message pops up only after a long stretch of Adjustments + External Editing (in PS Elements 6). It appears suddenly as I'm then trying to flip through images which were imported long ago (all JPEGs), and which I know are perfectly okay.

So far -- and I guess this is where I've been lucky -- a quick Quit + Relaunch of Aperture makes everything fine. This has prompted me to start routinely quitting Aperture at the end of the day, rather than simply leaving it open (my natural, albeit lazy, tendency).

But it sounds like many in this thread are being more seriously affected by this false error message. As always, make your voices heard (at <http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html>, or through the Apple Developer Connection's Bug Report page -- which anyone can sign up for).

I tried this procedure, and it does let you see the previews in the viewer. However, if I try to edit the photo (e.g., by going to full-screen mode), the stupid error message comes right back. Anybody know how to stop that?
