Phone keeps lighting up for no reason

Yesterday my iPhone 3G started lighting up at irregular intervals for no apparent reason. It will be in dark screen mode and then without me touching it the screen will come on and I'll see "slide to unlock." The screen stays on for about five seconds. It happens about once a minute.

I didn't change any settings, it just started happening last night. I was listening to an audiobook when it started. I don't know if that's relevant.

I tried restarting it. I made sure it has the latest update.

As I said, didn't change any settings, but I went into the settings anyway to see if there's some alert mode it could be in or something but I didn't find anything.

Anyone seen this?

Could be intermittent power. I used to have this happen to me with a BB with a bad power cord in the car. If you're plugged in, check to make sure all the connections are good. If not, well, next idea...

Thanks for the replies. Looks like this is one of those random glitches Apple hardware is justly famous for. Like the weird smell and squeaking keys of my brand-new MacBook Pro. Or the cracks in the case of my cousin's MacBook. When you buy an Apple product, I'm finding, you don't just buy it. It's more of an extended process and buying and returning, buying and returning until you get a "good one." Well, I need the laptop but I don't need this phone so back it goes.

I now have the same issue, iphone has a ghost, it turns on by itself, stays on for a few seconds and then slowly fades away. If i take to apple, what would they do for me? anyone with same experience have any ideas?
Plus my iphone with upgrade 2.1 now has more weird calls: I can hear myself talk while in a conversation with someone, and I get poorer reception than before i did the upgrade. We live in Atlanta (cingular/att) capital of the world, my wife and I both have new iphones. Let me see...Hmmmmm.......
Is it her phone or mine?

I have the same problem, that is what I was looking for on this discussion. It is annoying. Sometimes it says the accessory is not compatible when it does this. Other times it just lights up. Because I am usually on call I keep my phone next to my bed at night and this really drives me nuts when I am trying to go to sleep.

I used to have that happen on my old iPhone all the time. Since I have owned my 3G, it hasn't happened yet.

This used to also happen with my old Treo 650.
