Will keeping the iPhone plugged in most of the time be bad for the battery?
Since the iPhone's battery is rated for a limited number of full charges, I was thinking that I'd just leave it plugged in most of the time so that the phone runs off of external power rather than draining the battery. This should reduce the number of times that the battery needs to be charged up, thus extending the overall life of the battery. Does this reasoning make sense or would keeping the phone plugged in actually cause more harm to the battery?
Intel iMac,
Mac OS X (10.5.4),
20" white and 24" aluminum
It hasn't hurt mine. The lithium-ion battery does not suffer from the memory effect of earlier batteries. However, Apple does recommend that you discharge it once a month. Here is everything you need to know about iPhone batteries" http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

Personally, I keep it connected to power in the office (a good part of the day) and in the car. That's fine, as long as you run on the battery occasionally (which is necessary as lithium-based batteries do need to be used to maintain their health).
Thanks for the advice, guys. So I'll probably keep it connected while at work and at home on the weekdays. That'll be about 80% of the day. Then on weekends, I'll be out and about more, so I'll let it run on battery and make the Lithium and the Ions happy. 🙂
just like everyone else said... thats mostly a problem with older batteries. i personally try to discharge my battery once a week, but charging more often should do nothing but help you offset the poor battery life of the 3G
