To Engrave or Not To Engrave, That is the Question

I am sure it would be nice to engrave it, but as someone above said, you will not be able to sell it in the future to someone else. I had to sell my 4G to a friend to get $$ to buy 5G. If my name was on it, he either wouldn't buy it, or wouldn't give me as much $$.

Hi, Sally. I'd say engrave it. It looks nice and if something goes wrong with it Apple will attempt to repair it. I wouldn't worry about it unless you do plan on selling it down the road. I was skeptical too until I actually received it.

I agree. Engraving will lower resale value (especially if its name engraved) although the metal backs of iPod can be purchased on eBay i believe. Just pop off your old back, and place on a new one.

Come to think of it, if the metal back is scratched, then get a new one to make it all new again.

As you don't plan selling it in the near future, I would go for the engraved version, like I did. It makes it all the more special. I've got my wifes & my own name on it, and if you include a contact number, if you lose it, someone may return it. My brother-in-law from Venezuela lost his wallet in Belgium, and an Italian gentlemen phoned me on my mobile (he had a card with my details inside the wallet), and we got it back. The wallet also still contained the $300 which were inside!!

Good idea. I put my contact details [name, number, email] as the only contact on my iPod, as i dont have an engraving.

I made a post about engraving but it got deleted because it was against the T & C's apparently. this might go down the same road. stupid if u ask me.

I got my new iPod last week. I had it engraved. It was defective and I had to return it. Apple offered me the choice to have my replacement engraved or not. They said it would take 2-3 weeks to get the replacement if I had it personalized, but 3-5 days if I did not.

So if your iPod is personalized, you can still have it replaced with an iPod that has the same engraving (assuming it is still under warranty.)

If you get an engraving without personal information in it, it may not affect the resale value. (Mine said "Get your filthy claws off my iPod!")

I do wonder, though, whether the engraving process is why my iPod was defective... Guess I will never know. For this reason, I elected not to have my replacement engraved. On a side note, I am glad I made that decision since the replacement they sent me was the wrong model. They actually sent me an old iPod Photo so I had to return that as well. I STILL don't have my new iPod... grrrr.

I returned my personalized ipod photo too after a week or so because of my own reasons, i had to pay $34.86 CAN for it to ship to the apple warehouse in Ontario.

I ordered a 5G iPod for a Christmas present and had it engraved. But I just received the box and it's sealed just as it would have been had I bought it in the store, whereas I figured the box would've been opened to do the engraving (and I could confirm the inscription). I'd rather not open it before giving it as a gift, so I'm wondering whether anyone who has received an engraved iPod could confirm that this is how you received yours. If so, I guess it's done before it's packaged. Thanks in advance.

I am getting the 60GB video ipod and I want it engraved, I was wondering if anybody could tell me where it is I go to get it engraved, and how long will it take for them to engrave it and get it back to me? Do I need to send it off somewhere, if so where do I send it?

Yea I heard that thet is the way to do it, but see I got the 30GB video ipod for christmas from a friend and I was hoping to take it to the store, exchange it and pay the difference so that I could buy the 60GB one, and I was wondering how I would get it engraved if I did that, do you kno?

I buy an iPod nano in apple.com website to my wife as valentine gift with engraved the wording "crazy for you",
today I received the iPod with the wording "cra" only !!

I have confirmed my typing twice when I keyin the wording
"crazy for you" .............now what can I do ?!

I am very angry now !!

If you plan on selling it in the future, having it engraved is probably a bad idea.
