Apple messed up the "clicker" settings!!!

On my old iPod mini under "settings" there was an option called "clicker", then the options were "on, off, speaker, headphones, all". I had it set to "all" so I could hear the click wheel sound while I used the iPod in my car as well as when I take it to the gym with my headphones.

Well, now with this new iPod, that isnt possible because the only options they have for the "clicker" setting is "on, off". So, now the click noise only comes from the iPod unit itself & NOT ANY OUTSIDE SOURCES. That means you cant hear the clicks using your headphones, in your car, etc.

Does anyone else see the big problem with this?? How could they leave that off???

However, when I got my 5G (one of the first off
of the assembly line from China), I noticed that the
headphone option wasn't available.

hmm thats wierd. I received my iPod in December and it WAS shipped with the headphone option but once i updated, the option was gone. but urs came without the option?

are there different versions of the iPod shipped out in different times? sorry if thats a dumb question.

Ive brought up this topic before but the few users that replyed denied that the clicker was in the headphones also.

Hey, Apple did not mess up the clicker settings it made it smarter, the reason there only off and on, because whens it off, its off but when its on its on the device and in the headphones you just wont hear it if you playin music thats how its smart.. here test it out.

Play a song anysong leave one heaphone in ur ears and one out, make sure your volume is all the way up.now try moving the click wheel you should only hear the clickin sound from the ipod itself and not in the headphones.

Now Pause the Song and try moving the click wheel again you should hear it from both the headphones and the device 2 points for apple and a plus + for me?? ^ 🙂

Kelly, I can see your concern, but Apple never 'messes up'. They change their ideas & improve, but ultimately, the products only get better. At the time, that was the best ideas that Apple had. But as time goes on, Apple may re-evaluate their ideas to create an even better product. If it bothers you that much, then don't buy a new iPod, just stick with the classics.

Furthermore, these boards are for discussing technical aspects and difficulties, not for compaining about them. And no matter how much you miss the click in the headphones, its much better than any other mp3 player out there...then you'd REALLY be complaining.

I just tried out the clicker on my new White iPod and it works like the fellow said - Externally when nothing is playing AND Externally/Internally when playing music or videos.

HOWEVER, the click is SO quiet when i am playing videos that i can hear the EXTERNAL clicking better than in my headphones! Anyone know how to turn up the volume of the clicker when playing something?

I'm really enjoying this iPod 🙂 This seems to be the only quirk i have with it so far.

You said it, Stripes. The iPod is really so much better than anything else out there. I know this from personal experience. After we bought a 4G 20GB iPod for me, we decided to get an MP3 player for my wife as well. She wasn't all that hip to the idea, so we went with another brand, other than an iPod.

Well, not long ago, I started having problems with the iPod, but at least I could connect it to the computer and try to fix it. Almost to the day, my wife's MP3 player died as well, but no matter what computer I connected it to, there was NOTHING I could do to fix it because it was never recognized.

Fortunately, we purchased that P.O.S. at Costco, so we were able to return it, and now my wife is going to get the replacement iPod once the iPod video shows up. So we'll both be happy.

yeah, I am serious, too. with new 5G ipod, there are few problems I have exprienced, just not only two clicker options but also sluggish response when you click from page to page. when you play song, sometimes album art is not showing up. my previous ipod photo, nano don't have that problem at all. by the way, clicker option for new one is stupid that apple has ever done. it's very annoying. well, there are somebody who are not care, fine, they are very weird. it should be bothered every time when you hear clicker sound through headphone not outside like previous ipod. it should be fix next update. I have used every generation ipod so far. but new 5G ipod needs some helps about it.

Well, it may not be a big problem... but at least somebody is willing to post about it so that the information is out there to help others. After all, isn't that what Discussions are all about?!? Not unhelpful criticism.

Anyway. I figured I would share my experience. Although I upgraded from a 2G 20 gig, I knew that the 4G iPods offered the choice of making the clicker sound through the headphones, built-in speaker, or off. However, when I got my 5G (one of the first off of the assembly line from China), I noticed that the headphone option wasn't available.

After further playing with the iPod, I noticed that when I covered the iPod up to dampen the internal speaker, I could still hear subtle sounds through the headphones (about as subtle as the Mighty Mouse sound effects).

I think it is a nice touch... and just goes to show the hard work that Apple goes through to enhance the user experience... just like how they make the center select button slightly more textured for better grip.

i think it is a big mistake on apple's part. i dont know about amybody else, but the clicker makes me much more accurate with the scroll wheel. you dont get any tactile feedback, so the clicking sound really helps you "feel" when you've hit the next menu item. i want it even when i am looking at the screen. especially when i am in my car, the clicker makes it easier to quickly and accurately choose songs.

Apple, please return the old settings.
