Can I print wirelessly using HP Photosmart C4400?

I just bought my new Macbook and received "HP Photosmart C4400" printer for free. I have 2 computers at home. One is my stationary PC and the other one is my MacBook. I have installed my printer on both machines and it works fine but I was wondering if it is possible to print wirelessly so I don't need to re-plug the printer every time I want to print using different computer. I would prefer to have printer connected to my PC all the time and print wirelessly using my MacBook. So, is that possible? Thanks in advance!

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.4), 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Yes you can. You need to enable print sharing on your PC for that particular printer and any computer on the network should be able to print to it.

I recently bought a MacBook and I also got the same printer. C4480. The way I have mine set up is that I had the printer connected to my MacBook with my PC computer using Bonjour to print through it through the network. That's also another way to set it up if you want to hook your printer to your MacBook instead.

Now I have a totally different setup. I now have an AirPort Extreme Base Station and there is a USB slot on it. So I have my printer connected directly to it and any computer that's hooked up to the network can print off of it.

I've got a C4380 (wireless printer) and I've had mixed results with it in the wireless mode. My desktop is a Vista computer that WILL print wirelessly with this printer, but my MB will NOT connect in the wireless mode. My MB will only connect with this printer with either a USB cord or an ethernet cord.

I than setup my Vista computer to go ethernet and tried to get my MB to go wirelessly, but have not be able to print with my MB.

The only reason I bought the HP C4380 was to be able to go wirelessly with my 2 computers, but for the moment I've given up and only print from my Vista computer.

I spent about an hour with some HP tech from Canada trying to solve this problem. Basically, his solution was to uninstall the MB software and then download a later version from their internet site. When we got all done doing the new installation, I still had the same problem.

It's a great printer, but seems to have a problem with Apple software.

Let me give you some additional instructions. First of all, go ahead and install everything on your PC if you haven't done so. Once your printer is setup on your PC, now on to the Mac.

Go to System Preferences and click on Print and Fax. Click the + to add a printer. Click on the Windows tab. Click on mshome, your PC computer name, and either sign on as a guest or log on with a user name and password. After you do that, click on the printer name that you named it on your PC. Where it says "Print Using" at the bottom, select "select a driver to use...". Select HP Photosmart C4400 series. Click add. You should be ready to print after that.

I just did all the steps to confirmed that it worked on mine and it did. Let me know if it works for you.

For my PC (Windows XP Professional) I did the following in order to get the C4400 to work with my Airport Express
Start by using the software CD to load the drivers for the printer
Make sure you plug the printer directly into your PC when the software tells you (not before) and let the program finish its work. You will have to go through the process of printing a sample page, scan it, etc. So be patient.
After you are done - unplug the printer and plug it back into your airport express, Launch the Bonjour Printer Wizard, follow the steps and make sure you select the HP C4400. **Also set the printer as your default** Once that has been completed go to your start menu and launch the Printers & Faxes menu. The status for your C4400 printer should show as "ready" and under the location column the name of your airport express should be listed as well. If you see those two things try to print from your computer. If you see the printer listed more than once - you must delete all of them and start again. I printed a three page document and it printed all, in addition to clearing the que.

The HP Digital Imaging Monitor will show that your printer is disconnected, but it appears that you will only need that when you are scanning, making copies or using the software to manipulate photos. (if anyone knows how to fix that - tell me) 🙂

Good luck!

Lastly, I haven't received my MacBook Pro yet, but if anyone knows how to set that up to work on the Airport Express - I would gratefully appreciate the instructions!

InDC, deiviuxs isn't trying to hook up the printer to an AirPort Express. Dei is trying to print to it wirelessly from a MacBook while the printer is hooked up to a PC desktop. Dei has no problems printing to either one while it's directly connected to each.

But since I own an Airport Extreme Base Station, I can help you out with your last statement since the Express is just like it minus the Gigabit Ethernet ports. Both support network printing. First thing's first is that you need to plug your printer into the USB port on your base station. Then go to your Utilities folder under Applications and click on Airport Utility. Your Base Station should be listed. Click it, click manual setup, and then click on printers. Your printer should be recognized by the base station and then your printer should be available to anyone who is on your network.
