Display issue/Grey spots around edges of screen

The first week I had my Macbook Pro I noticed about 5 or 6 little grey splotches on the right hand edge of the screen. About a month later tons of them had formed on the top edge in a cluster. I didn't take my computer in because it wasn't that noticable, only at an angle. Well it's been 9 months, and there's now spots on the left hand side, and it's spreading. A week ago they started to appear on the bottom on the screen, and all the spots on all the other edges are forming rings around them.

I took it to my tech at our school since they sold us the laptops, and he said the spots were too small for water damage, and that he's never seen anything like it before. So I took it into the apple store THINKING they would replace it, instead they told me it had to be water damage and that was that. I've never spilled anything on this computer, and the spots started the week I got it. No matter how many times i explained the situation to those people, they just kept repeating "I'm not saying that you're lying, but we dont know what was actually done to the computer, we say it's water damage, which isn't covered" and refused to fix it.

Its just a bunch of little grey dots clustered together, some are a little spread out but as the weeks go by it just gets worse.

I'm not really sure what else to do at this point, the apple store obviously wasnt a big help. And I still have no idea what it is, i just know that this computer is extremely important to my schooling, it doesn't get banged around, i dont even eat around it. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Just found this post. I've had my MBP for 10 days and just noticed 4 or 5 light gray spots along the left side. Not sure what to do. Doesn't appear to be getting any worse, but with all the other problems with these computers, makes me wonder. from the serial number, this one was made in late Feb, 08. So far, no other problems. Anyone had this problem yet and had it repaired by apple.

I've had my MBP since January 2007, and as others have described, grey blotches were developing around the center of the screen. I took it to the Apple store in Chicago, and the genius, Steve, acknowledged that this didn't look like a 'beat up' and took the computer in to replace the display. However, shortly after I got it back with a new display, the grey smudges started to slowly develop again. I took it back to Apple today (before my protection plan expires) and this time they said flat out that this is my mistake, and Apple doesn't cover it. I pointed out that this seems a change in their behavior not mine, and the 'genius' got a second opinion, but same message. This is clearly a problem in these displays, but probably there were too many, and Apple simply started blaming the user, no matter how good the computer looks and how great it has been taken care off. Very disappointing, I'm also planning to give feedback to Apple directly.

Hi,

I have a late 2006 MBP 15" 2.16Ghz and I'm on my third display due to this issue. I've had the problem with grey patches suddenly appearing after several months of use on my two other displays. All three displays were made by different manufacturers (the current one is the 09C56 display that I believe is made by Samsung). In the past, I brought the Macbook Pro into my local Apple Store and the people at the Genius Bar said it was due to stuck sub-pixels and changed my display under the Apple Care warranty.

I've had my current display for over a year now, and it's worked brilliantly so far. However, a few days ago, I noticed the same grey cluster appearing again, on the middle right had part of the display, close to the edge (it's about the size of a mole, darker towards the centre, and lighter towards the edges). I thought it was a number of dead pixels again. However, this time, with a magnifying glass, I noticed that all the pixels are working -- they are neither stuck nor dead.

I couldn't explain why the spot looked like it does though. So, I took a photo with my point and shoot with the flash off, the camera set to macro in full zoom, and with the magnifying lens right against the lens of the camera. From the photo ( http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1205ce0.jpg), which I enlarged in iPhoto (to the maximum zoom setting), I could indeed see that the red, green and blue pixels were working. However, the red, green and blue pixels in the dark spot were of a *darker hue* than the other pixels.

So, I'm not sure what the problem could be. I was thinking it may be a bit of debris in the LCD display itself, discolouring the light, or perhaps some sort of fault with the LCD cells that have developed.

Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? I plan to take it back to the Apple Store. However, it would be nice to find a longer-term solution as the Apple Care warranty is due to expire soon and I don't wish for this to keep happening.
