iPod Model Numbers

Hi, So I've noticed some things with the ipod families that it's that there seems to be two different 'model numbers' attached to each product. For example, the model most people go by is the MAxxxll/a ect and yet I find other people talking about having ipod model Axxxx. This seems to go for every ipod available, nano, shuffle, classic ect. Does anyone know what that second number (Axxxx) is and how is corresponds to the regular model number(mxxxxll/a)? I've called apple themselves, and none of the sales reps or techs seem to have a clue. Please help!

The longer one seems to be used for sales and inventory tracking. It will vary based on configuration and other differences, such as case color.

The shorter one seems to be printed on the back of iPods. It stays consistent within a product line. I can't verify it personally with the latest iPods, but for older models such as the 3G iPod, it stays the same whether it's a 15gb model or 30gb model.

So they are used for different purposes and vary for different reasons.

Is there a specific reason why you are asking?

When I do a search on "MA623LL/A" using Google, it seems to be an 8GB touch. Doing the same on "MB376LL/A" show it to be a 32GB touch.

There has only been one iPod touch line, in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB capacities (so far). The 32GB model was added in Feb 2008. The 2.0 software was released after that, so the more recently sold had the 2.0 software pre-installed.

How do I tell?

If it's used, ask the seller. At worst, you'll have to pay $9.95 to download the 2.0 upgrade.
