From 7.7 to 7.7.1 - what happens?

As far as I know, it's just updated. You shouldn't end up with 2 iTunes. But I'm not 100% on that as I usually update through Software Update.

Mrs H would have no reason to tell iTunes anything since she hasn't downloaded it yet. And hopefully she won't have anything to tell them anyway.

I'm sorry your having problems with your stuff. Maybe you should tell them.

Yes, I am enjoying my MacBook very much (a little too much, probably). And I'm embarrassed to admit that my 993 posts are only a testament to my enthusiasm and not my experience.. but hopefully I'll get there! In the same vein, I guess I was having a stroke of insecurity that day, but with the kind and encouraging responders, such as yourself, I am glad I've decided to keep it as well. Thank You for your kind words.

I understand what your saying about the 'patch' as opposed to the full upgrade. Although I'm not sure, is there in fact a difference in the quality/stability of the upgrade from the patch to the full? From your previous post it sounds as if you have already upgraded to 7.7? Has that been working well for you? Not your question, I know. I only ask because I've been lucky with the 2 upgrades (through SU) with no problems whatsoever, but so many have had problems.....
I would just hate to see you go from functional to not until they get the bugs worked out. But like you, I only use it with my MB and my Classic. In any case, now I seem to remember back when the update first came out someone talking about this very thing. SU or Store Download. I recall possibly that they were told to download the store version and then once completed delete the old version?

I've been searching for it, but as of yet unable to find it. I'm probably getting ready to time out here, so I will keep going through the search results and see if I can locate it. If so, I'll post back asap. Of course maybe someone that knows will happen along and let you know before hand.

Found this thread by accident while cruisin' the iTunes forum (which I rarely do) to glean some experiences of others before deciding whether or not to upgrade iTunes from 7.6.1.

7.7.1 no longer how shows in Software Update, only 8, so I thought 'do I or don't I?'

So, happily ignoring the various comments about errors, bugs, gremlins, download difficulties etc, I decided to UPGRADE!

Here is what I did:

First I backed up my iTunes Library. As later comments will show, that was a waste of three DVDs, but at least I now have a backup!

Repaired permissions. Closed all applications. Removed the iTunes icon from the Dock. Downloaded iTunes 8 from the Apple Download Page. Closed Safari. Read the read-me file that came with the installer. Went and had another coffee and cigarette in the garden.

Came back, marvelling that it wasn't raining, and installed iTunes 8. Repaired permissions - and there were a few repairs this time. Slightly surprised that the installer didn't ask for a restart, so I gave my iMac one anyway. Slightly longer bootup than usual, a good sign BTW that something is being reset and/or properly installed.

Opened iTunes 8 with trembling mouse-click.

EVERYTHING WORKS AS IT SHOULD! 🙂

My Library and playlists were exactly as I had left them. The Store opened as it should first time. In fact everything was so 'normal' that I had to check if I actually was running iTunes 8! Replaced the icon in the Dock. Made sure Genius wasn't operating - that's for later!

Have Annie Lennox blaring out as I type this.

Life is good - I can recommend iTunes 8!

So, you decided to take the plunge did you? I'm glad your tunes are all as they should be. Annie Lennox eh? I never would have guessed. And now I'm wondering what Mrs.H is going to do. I haven't checked but I wonder if 7.7.1 is still available through the store (in case she doesn't want to take the full plunge).

Personally, I've had such good luck with my 7.7.1 that I'm extremely hesitant to 'upgrade' to version 8. And my tunes are not the one thing I want to have problems with. I think I'll just hang back for a while still. Not to mention... I've never repaired permissions or backed up my library, so I need to learn how to do those things first. But I do have a question...

What does removing the icon from the dock have to do with the download?

Absolutely nothing!

BUT (pet theory of mine) the alias in the Dock could corrupt/get corrupted when the Application it points to gets replaced with another version when that is installed.

No, probably not, never seen that either. 🙂
