just wondering, does anyone also have battery problems? the heat may be coming from something with the battery because i've had my battery replaced 3 times and the 3rd is also dying rather fast (i get 20-30 mins =( and it hasnt been a year for this battery). I know its definitely not the battery's problem so maybe this also contributes to the overheating issue?

Well, I'm having the same problem- the lines, the big blocks of colour, plus about 10 other things not working, some of which are unrelated. Anyway, I've got SMCFanControl and it's running at 21 degrees right now, but still there are lines.

It's a 2006 24" iMac which I've just completely wiped and that didn't fix any of the problems with it. Worst part is, except the lines, all the other graphical glitches go away when I take a screenshot so I can't capture them!

Oh and right now I'm back on 10.4.7 since Airport has died and it doesn't think it has an ethernet port anymore so I can't update...

Dropped my MBP off at the Apple Store today. Unfortunately couldn't repro the issue even though the Apple Genius invoked intense load on the system and it climbed up to 180 degrees F. (He was amazingly fast with his keyboard shortcuts opening stuff left and right!) I explained the problems repro in everyday usage, so it was frustrating to not have it happen there on the spot and sooner.

They'll check it out in further detail and I have hope they can replicate the video distortion and help me get it fixed.

I want to add myself to the list of people who are having this problem. I get lines almost constantly now. I've been attempting to just deal with it, but lately it has gotten very bad. I have had a handful of random screen crashes today. Earlier my screen got a crazy stretching and ripple effect. I bought my MBP for college, and there is no way I can afford the cost of repair. I did purchase Applecare, but because I bought my MBP when it was first released, my university gave me one for the powerbook instead. I had not noticed until when I attempted to register it and it did not work. They did not accept refunds or exchanges either. I plan on contacting Apple and referring them to this thread. The fact that we are all having the same problem is evidence that something is faulty. Apple needs to take care of this.

and here's some more great news from apple,
appreantly the new 17" is having graphic card problems,
and its heat related... the irony.

so apple, what did we learn?
i'm really considering buying the new 17",
but do apple really deserve my hard earned money?

i buy your faulty products for a $1000 more,
and apple care doesn't exist where i live,
do you really deserve my hard earned money?

Add me to the list. I've been experiencing the exact same issues with my MacBook Pro for the past couple of months. Only this week has it gotten so bad that I've started looking for a solution... and despite the fact that the problem isn't being addressed by Apple, I'm happy to have found this thread.

I too have always suspected that the enormous amount of heat my notebook generates had to be slowly degrading its components... I actually use it with the 23" display, and almost always leave it on a cooling mat since I bought it (as other users have suggested.) It helps to bring the temperature down and used to prevent a lock up, but doesn't seem to do anything anymore.

In the past few days, it happens when I'm running only firefox and one or two other applications. I'm crippled by an aluminum brick that's had an outrageous cost of ownership in the $1,000/year range if you do the math. Needless to say I won't be buying another MacBook of any sort. And my advice to anyone who refuses to go back to a PC: do yourself a favor and buy the cheapest MacBook (and not the PRO) if you are going to buy one. The track record is that these machines just don't last all that long.
