Nikon D90 RAW files

I just got a Nikon D90 yesterday. I found that Aperture won't open RAW files from the D90. It looks like they changed the format, since RAW files from my D40x worked beautifully.

I get this "unsupported image format" when I try to view a NEF file.

Bleh... Did some searching and it looks like we're stuck until the next OS or Aperture patch... In the meantime its "ViewNX" for NEF conversion.

Cough... cough... HURRY UP y'all!

Guy Kawasaki said he bought a D90 in his blog yesterday... Maybe he can call up his old pals and get them to get a move-on.

(they still haven't added d700 support yet either...)

Why does Apple have to make a RAW update each time a new model comes out. Isn't RAW files pretty much the same? Does Apple have to build a "plugin" for each and every camera that does RAW? If so, wouldn't that make quality differences in Apertures RAW engine between models, if some cameras (ex. pros) are given more attention when developed versus RAW import for ex. Nikon D50?

Same problem here. I suspect we're probably 2 weeks or more away from RAW NEF support for this camera. This happens with almost every major update to Nikon and Canon cameras. I suspect that with a brand new sensor in this camera that the NEF format differs from that of most of the other Nikon SLRs. It sure is painful using that garbage Nikon NX software. Anyway, you are not alone in your pain.

Hi, You are not alone. i have a new D700 and have the same problem. Apple service have been very helpful and have informed me that every new camera needs to be manually added to the list of cameras that work with Aperture. They have confirmed support for the D90 and D700 will be in the next update; but when I have no idea. It really is a pathetic updating service - they need to release a small patch within a week of a new cameras release. Canon also have a series of new models being launched in the next couple of weeks. None of them will work!!! Come on Apple you can do better than this!!

You can read about the sensors in current Nikon bodies here. The ones in the D300 and D90 are apparently similar. I believe that the D3/D700 sensor is designed by Nikon and manufactured by Sony.

The D300 does not have video capability—the D90 is unique in that regard among DLSRs for the time being. OS X has read D300 file since early this year (10.5.2 IIRC).

Cheers,

Andreas
