iTunes 8 error 13026

I downloaded and installed iTunes 8 and everything was fine until I switched iTunes Libraries using MultiTunes. The first switch went smoothly, but after attempting to switch back an unknown error (13026) occurred. Now I can't open iTunes without this error occurring. Any idea?

I got the error also. After calming down after my panic attack, coming here and reading these two posts:

IMadeThisNameUp's

"...the programmers over at Apple didn't take into account that I might be running iTunes from multiple machines in my house..."

Daddyp's
"Received same error. Need to delete "itunes.library.genuis.itdb and it will go to the main library. "

I am in the same position as "IMadeThisNameUp". I have 2 machines (PCs) that have iTunes. The secondary machine is a COMPLETE BACKUP of my primary iTunes PC's iTunes music library (140GB, 24,100 songs!) and EVERYTHING under 'c:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\My Music\iTunes' directory. - All the "Album Artwork" directories, .xml - and now ".itdb" files (now at 987MB, 3,828 files total), and the "Mobile Applications" directory (since my wife is now the gleaming owner of a brand new iPhone <jealous...>).

...So, after closing iTunes, I first renamed the two ".itdb" files to ".itdb.old" inside the iTunes directory.
When I reopened iTunes, it LOOKED like Genius was going to still work, but such is not the case. It will give you an error up at the top of the Genius sidebar basically saying that it can't find any suggestions for any song you are currently playing...

After coming to Apple support to figure out what to do and getting no help (and there isn't any mention of what to do to update or fix your Genius database in the iTunes help...!), I finally tried tight-clicking a song to see what I would get. I saw "Start Genius" in the contextual menu, so I of course tried that. An error popped up stating: "Genius is unavailable for the song XXX" - "Choosing update from the Store menu will update your Genius results. If, after updating, iTunes is still unable to identify this track, please choose another song or artist..." !

Since I'd never USED the "Store" Menu, I spent too much time looking for it while in the iTunes store! I finally realized maybe I should look up, and lo and behold, there it was. The "Store" menu in the menu bar of iTunes <red-faced...>.

SO... I finally see the "Update Genius" menu item in the "Store" menu, choose it, and Genius began to update thank gawd... ( Mind you, on my 1.87GHz Intellistation, - with 24k+ songs, this take QUITE SOME TIME! - But in the end, iTunes on my primary iTunes PC now WORKS.

What can be gleaned from my experience, and others in this forum, is that you cannot use another computer's .itdb files on another's. You can't sync (backup in my case) the whole "iTunes" directory. I have written a batch file to MOVE those particular files OUT of the iTunes db folder BEFORE I sync now....!

REMEMBER: The ONLY files you really have to delete, are the two ".itdb" files ("iTunes Library Extras.itdb" & "iTunes Library Genius.itdb"). Everything else can STAY. You DON'T HAVE TO LOSE all your settings and playlists, etc.

Hope this helps. Sorry so long...

Good luck.

Here's another angle to the problem.
The reason I got this error was because my computer, at work, that normally maps up the drive letter G to a remote disk where I keep my music, had been overtaken by a memory card reader that was plugged in when I started my computer.

Before I noticed this I had already docked my iPod thus starting up iTunes who tried to find my music folder on G: without success and as a result to this created a new iTunes library file with nothing in it. It didn't however create a new Genius file so when I restarted my computer the two files were not in sync.

I removed the genius file as Daddyp's said and got iTunes to work again but with no songs in the library. So I also deleted the library file and then moved and renamed the last working library file from the folder "Previous iTunes Libraries"

That finally did the trick.
