NEED Serious Help with JVC GZ-HD3U. Please.

Alright I have just under 2 days to finish this Media Project for school. My group recorded the whole thing and now my JVC Everio GZ-HD3U is giving me problems.

Before I could easily uploaded everything to the Mac. No problem. Then I went to school, plugged the camcorder with a firewire into one of the school's Mac computers and the screen said "No Connection". So then I go home thinking I could just upload it there and put it on a CD. I get there and the camera isn't even showing up! The import button doesn't show up or anything! And I'm pretty sure I didn't mess with any of the settings on the camcorder. The only thing I can think of...was that I had the camcorder in my bag...maybe it hit the ground a couple times? Could it affect it in that way?

PLEASE someone help me out.

Sorry, my bad if you say it can work with iMovie 6. Description here which mentions software for the Mac, did you install that?

http://www.jvc.ca/en/CONSUMER/product-detail.asp?model=GZ-HD3U

.TOD is JVC's name for MPEG-2.
Your file opened in previous versions because the component installed with your camera software. It now longer works so JVC had to write a new one. It has to be updated with the JVC download I mentioned earlier.

Mpeg2 is the standard delivery format for a DVD, not intended for further editing.

It apparently works with iMovie 8, see this thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6638783

but not with iMovie 6:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7826808

It is a hard disk camera. iMovie 6 is said to only support DV streams from cameras using tape.

Thats alright. I'm just really frustrated. I just need specific answers so I can figure out what my problem is exactly, and find the answers to fix it, not to find out that I'm screwed, you know?

So yes, I did install that software when I first got the camera. Done.
I also downloaded the file from that website you gave me. Done.
Now I'm confused as to what to do next? Do I have to install more files? Or am I just going to get a zero on this assignment cause I cant upload my video?

sounds a bit rude to me... I'm too sensitive.. ? lost in translation..?

what is your set-up? hardware? Intelmac, PPC? which version of QT is in use (the plug-in is for 7.4., actually we have 7.5.5 ..)? did you install the plug-in or just downloaded it?

iM08+ 7.4. + plug-in allows a direct import.
for converting tod/mp2 for usage in iMHD6, usual advice on this board is the combo of mp2-playback-component (apple.com, 20$) and Mpeg Streamclip (www.squared5.com, free) ..

Lost in translation. Not rude at all. A request to explain how the problem can be fully identified and then solved - which you have.

The real question for us is: considering how many hoops you have to go through to get the video from that camera on board iMovie 6, why would anyone buy it?

USB is no good, it has to be firewire.

As Karsten has explained you need:

mpegStreamclip:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html

which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

which is a mere $20.

Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:

http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm

which costs $25.

Let's just say that your English is still in beta! 😀

no doubt - learned 'English' +auf der Bettkante+ with/from/off my American girlfriend (Japanese heritage... probably that explains...) some hundred years ago..

funny enough: I do notice, some 'native speakers' write in a kind of.. not-so-right-English ... so, on a scale of 0-10, I give myself a plain 3 .. !!
and watching 'action movies' in its original versions probably teaches me wrong phrases too,
+Yippie-Ya-Yeah Schweinebacke..+ User uploaded file (German version avoids probs with wordfilter...)
