Itunes will no longer open after upgrading to 8. I believe because my music library is not on my local machine it is having problems. How does a person downgrade Itunes?
If only all of the suggestions given would fix everyome's problem. I've tried all of the suggestions given and none of them work for me. Given the lack of posts since October 22 I presume everyone else's problems have disappeared. So is this problem now really really localised? By the way I never had any og the Genius files quoted in other posts.
I've tried all of these solutions, and no results. It just puts the iTunes librarygenius.itdb file in again, and I delete it, restart iTunes and same result. This is driving me crazy...
I'm in the same boat, my iTunes is library is stored on a remote ubuntu server, but I run afp.
Every time I try to plug in my iPod touch I get non stop error messages "The iPod cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (13005)."
I've just had the same problem as every body else.
My itunes updated to itunes 8.
And funny enough I also use an external hard drive.
After hours of trying various solutions i came across the following:
I deleted the genius.itdb file in my itunes library, and also the 2 files named extras.itdb
This seems to have worked a treat and my itunes has just fired up again!
Just waiting for my genius files to be sent to apple again, and then I'll try attaching my ipod touch and hope that in doing so my itunes stays alive!
keep the faith 😉
hope this helps.
FWIW, I just ran into this problem for the second time, after an iTunes crash. I believe this is mainly caused by an interrupted connection to the external drive, resulting in a single corrupted file that crashes the entire iTunes library. The last time this happened it was right before I upgraded my hard drive (i had already copied everything over) so I just assumed the the old hard drive had died or been corrupted!!
When it happened to me again on my new hd, needless to say I was indignant... All I had to do was delete the '.lock' files and everything came back. In a worst case scenario you can always hold alt while starting iTunes which will allow you to create a new library, and then add all of your music back in, but that would be a LOT of effort, and definitely isn't ideal...
Just thought I'd share my experience. For the windows guys, if you don't see the files make sure you can see hidden and system files (tools -> folder options -> view settings or something like that, on vista you have to hit the alt key first to get the tools menu)
