HD Purchases disappear as soon as the download is over

Hi! I am using an external USB drive for my iTunes folder since the Mini has such a small hard drive and Video files take so much space...

I downloaded a bunch of new NBC content (Yay!) selecting in call cases the HD version...

The File downloads the 1.4Gbyte files, and then moves onto the next download (which is the SD version of the same episode)... While the HD download is in progress the HD version shows in the list of TV shows as selectable... as soon as it finishes downloading and the download manager moves to the SD version the HD version in iTunes becomes greyed out and has an exclamation mark against it.

The error message when you click on it says "The TV show "episode name" can not be used because the original file can not be found. Would you like to locate it?" With a Yes/Cancel option... Choosing Yes opens a standard Open box where I can navigate to the files location to tell iTunes where it is. Except that I don't know where it is... it's not in my iTunes folder as far as I can tell...

Obviously I'm not going to be happy if I just spent $50 on TV Episodes I can't get.

Apple.. where are my files?? User uploaded file??

Wanted to update this thread and say that the new iTunes 8.0.1 version seems to have fixed the problem. At last! It still would have been nice to have an official acknowledgement of the problem.

When downloading HD content now, it appends "(HD)" to the end of the filename - so downloads no longer overwrite each other. Another neat touch is that it groups HD and SD content into a single entry in iTunes, with a little [HD-SD] symbol next to the filename, so you don't see duplicated files.

Now there's only the little problem that the store credits Apple gave me for deleted HD episodes don't apply to the HD version when I try to re-download... ugh.

Maybe not completely yet. Purchased a full series of Samantha Who? #1 on 10/25. This time the HD files overwrote the SD files, for what reason I now can not sync those to my iPod.

However, the most recent parallel download of the #2 episodes worked fine.
