Connecting ipod nano 4th generation to car stereos...

I have a Goodmans GCE2814IP car stereo, compatible with the iPod nano 1st gen. that I currently have, and others that were released after that. Does anyone know if the new iPod nano 4th gen. will connect to this car stereo without having to buy any additional leads, or at all? I have contacted Apple and Goodmans direct but awaiting a reply. Can anyone else out there help out?

Good evening all,

I am in the same boat as many here, I have upgraded to a 4th gen Nano for the car, and it won't charge. I called in the Apple store in central London, and the Genius Bar people were not yet aware of this problem, but you are. Somehow this needs to be escalated to Apple. I was very pleased with my new 4th gen device, I sold the 3rd gen one, so maybe the best fix will be to buy one back 🙂

I am in Manchester England, I have a Jaguar XF with manufacturer's ipod dock. All the functions of the iPod still work on the car screen and steering wheel.

I have removed the connector cable from my car to examine it, it connects from a 20 pin male socket to the iPod dock connector.

This cable has no maker's name or identification.

The cable uses 12 of the 20 pins to connect. My guess is that the charging function in the 4th gen Nano device uses a different connection through which to charge.

I wonder if a new style or type of cable will solve this, using some of the different pins from the car end of the connector.

This is Chris who originally started this discussion. I have purchased an Apple iPod nano 4G 16gb since starting this discussion and can reveal that it does connect with the Goodmans stereo stated in my original message (posted back in september) and all the functions work fine (except the video playback due to the stereo not supporting this function). However, the iPod does not charge via the stereo connection. When connected, the iPod displays a message saying that 'charging is not supported with this device.' I hope that this has helped others out there with similar problems or queries, and would like to thank you all for your support and advice.

Chris.

I signed up simply to add another unhappy customer to the list. My Alpine iDA-X300 plays and sorts through the menus fine, just no charging. My first iPod is a 4g Nano given to me as a gift, and I picked up the Deck to put it to use. The intention on connecting the Nano and leaving it in the locked glovebox. Well now I have a few hrs of playtime until the Nano can get to a USB connection.

I've been a iPod/iTunes hold out, not being one to dive headfirst into proprietary components/software. Unless there is an easy fix I'm going to use the USB connection for the stereo (it will charge, but not play the Nano) and a thumbdrive. No AAC, no compatibility issues, and 8gig is about 20.00. I'm about done giving the benefit of the doubt to Apple.

I have an 09 Infinity FX35 and switched from a 3g nano to a 4G Nano and find the charging is not supported. Seems Apple intentionally changed this without regard to the impact of all the people that will be affected by this change. I have returned the 4G and went shopping on Amazon for another 3G.

This was handled badly by Apple...I wish they would not have made the switch, but if they absolutely had to, they should have worked wtih their parnets to communicate AND supply an adapter so people will move to the 4G.

This will cause a ground swell of demand for the 3G models...not something that is in Apple's best interests...a bonehead move IMHO...

I have a Belkin Auto kit, which plugs into the cigar lighter, uses a dock connector to plug into my iPod (just purchased 4th Gen Nano 16Gb) and has a jack plug on the side to plug into my car stereo.

Always worked a treat before, but with the new Nano i too get the "Charging is not supported with this accessory" message. IRRITATING!

Come on Apple, sort it out. Can this be fixed with a firmware update or not?
