Genius is unavailable ...

After enabling Genius, I gave it a go, over & over - every time the message was that it was unavailable for the tune I had selected ... not what I expected !!

I have had the same problem, so at least you aren't alone. I assume it's just teething problems, but I hope the Apple folks know the problem exists and are working on it.

I had complete Success!
Every tune "geniused" perfect playlists 25, 75 songs that I saved successfully.......
for about 24 hrs.
Now I get an "update genius or else...."
All of my successful playlists are gone and those songs aren't available for "genius" anymore
What's up with that?
Is there a time limitation for playlists?
Seems a little like BigBrother Apple.
Why is no one monitoring this thread?

Make sure you have all your songs checked.

I had all songs checked before upgrading to iTunes 8. I have always gotten the "Genius is temporarily unable..." message when I tried to get iTunes Store song recommendations based on my selected song.

I unchecked all songs and then rechecked all songs. Next, I updated Genius. After a long wait, Genius still would not provide song recommendations.

I turned off Genius, waited a bit, then turned on Genius. After logging-in, glancing at the disclaimer, and waiting almost 30 minutes for Genius to re-examine my songs I got "Genius is temporarily unable...."

Is anyone able to get song recommendations? If so, what's the secret? If not, then what is Apple doing to fix this?

Not working here. I did the update thing again for my entire library (with all songs checked & selected) & it still will not make a Genius playlist for any artists not in the iTunes Store & even for some that are.

Some bands/songs work fine & the resulting playlists make sense with the original selection but the results are pretty random. I arbitrarily selected about 30 different songs by various bands & in varied genres throughout my Library & about 20% of them came up as, Genius is unavailable for "song name".

And, some of the Genius lists it will do are comical. I picked Also Sprach Zarathrustra & even though I have hundreds of classical songs, the contents of the playlist it selected included Rosanna by Toto, Who Can it Be Now by Men at Work, On the Road Again by WIllie Nelson & Wedding Bell Blues by 5ifth Dimension. Not a single other classical tune in the list. Can anyone Kevin Bacon the relationship between any of these songs that makes them fit into the same playlist?

I have 9,000 songs in my iTunes, and most of the ones I've tried work with Genius. Everything from obscure artists in weird genres to The Beatles and AC-DC. However, I've found that The Bee Gees, Creedence, and The Doors do not work. Also certain tracks from Prince ("When Doves Cry" does not work, but The Black Album works just fine). With one exception, all the tracks were pulled from CD's rather than purchased from iTunes (the exception being "Hey Tonight" from Creedence, purchased from iTunes but doesn't work). So bizarre! I know these songs work for other people, just not me!

Any thoughts on this? I note that these are all Warner Bros. disks, and most of them are from double disk collections. Make me wonder if there's a problem in the tags? The only one it wouldn't explain is the "Hey Tonight."
