Genius is unavailable ...

After enabling Genius, I gave it a go, over & over - every time the message was that it was unavailable for the tune I had selected ... not what I expected !!

I have had the same problem, so at least you aren't alone. I assume it's just teething problems, but I hope the Apple folks know the problem exists and are working on it.

The song Sympathy for the Devil from Hot Rocks Disc 2 gave me the same problem even though genius was up to date. As an experiment, I changed the album to Beggars Banquet, which also has the same song, updated genius and taa daa, iTunes was able to generate a genius playlist.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you why the change worked.
