iTunes 8 & Vista 64: iPhone not detected

Well, I installed the new iTunes on my Vista 64 without problems and everything seemed to be working just fine. Then I plugged in my iPhone 3G. Aaaannnd.... nothing. Doesn't show up at all. I done reinstalls twice, making sure I was using the 64-bit versions, and still nothing. Vista recognizes the connection and it shows up in my device lists, but iTunes doesn't see it. Haven't had this issue on my 32-bit machine.

Driver issues maybe?

I have a similar issue ... I'm not running 64-bit Vista, but rather 32-bit Vista. I have both an iPhone 3G and a 1st gen iPod Touch ... both react the same.

After initial installation of iTunes 8 everything seemed to be fine. My iPod Touch was recognized and would sync (and upgraded to 2.1) successfully. Also, my iPhone 3G would be recognized and would sync.

Then on Friday when I came home from work excited to upgrade my iPhone 3G to 2.1, neither my iPod nor iPhone was recognized in any way when connected via the docking cable ... not even as a generic device ... no charging ... nothing.

Well for lack of anything else to try I rebooted the PC, and wouldn't you know everything was fine and working great again ... both iPod and iPhone were recognized in iTunes, syncing (and I was able to upgrade my iPhone to 2.1).

However, after I disconnected both the iPod and iPhone from the PC ... back to neither being recongnized in any way when connected via the dock cable.

It seems that each time I reboot the iPod and iPhone are ... for ONE TIME ... recognized. After the devices are disconnected, the only way to "get them back" is to reboot my PC. I hate that!

Give the reboot a try and let us know if you have a similar experience.

I'm having the exact same issue. I connect both my iPod Classic 60GB and my iPhone 3G to my PC with Vista x64 installed and they work fine (syncing, visible in Explorer, etc.). Then I disconnect them both to go somewhere and reconnect them when I get back and suddenly I hear a slight beep and then neither is recognized by Windows or by iTunes (and neither seems to start charging) until I reboot the PC. I don't typically reboot my PC very frequently (maybe once every 3 weeks) as I run a distributed computing client on it so this has become a fairly large annoyance

I'm running vista-32 and i'm having the same problem. I was happy with the update as it helped with the keyboard alot but now I'm regretting it since I can't get my iphone to connect. I plug my iphone in and it charges but windows wont detect it or anything. Didn't think there were any issues until i went to sync a few minutes ago... Please get this fixed apple. I keep my phone jailed because I like to always have the latest releases but if the updates aren't going to be tested to the point where the update doesn't ruin iphone detection then it doesn't give me much reason to keep paying for apps in the app store if i'm going to have to wait for the updates to mature enough after major release to be usable anyways...

Same here!!!!

I have windows vista ultimate x64. I have upgraded iTunes to 8 and upgraded the firmware to my iphone3g to 2.1. Then after a restart the iphone IS NOT RECOGNIZED AT ALL! No charging, no itunes recognition, like windows ignores it. Tried various ways of rebooting, uninstalling iTunes, reinstalling iTunes, even downgrading although i haven't found a valid iTunes 7.x 64 bit version out there.

_*PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS! THIS IS MAJOR!*_

I was getting the same exact symptoms with Vista Business 32bit and iPod Touch. The computer detected the Touch once and then is not detected on subsequent connections. I did the "fix" about removing and reinstalling the Apple Device Manager and hasn't helped much.

I'm getting better luck after I unplug my HP printer, even when the fix was supposed to take care of this. And when I sync my Treo while my iPod is connected, the iPod then disconnects. All new behavior, with no other change than upgrading iTunes.

Apple should do a bit more testing before they release updates into the wild. But then again, they have been slacking on their quality control lately.

I too am having problems of the same nature -- however on Windows XP. Here's a post I created earlier:

Since upgrading to iTunes 8, the application no longer recognizes my iPhone -- so I am unable to sync it. It still shows up in the Windows Explorer and the phone appears perfectly functional. My 80GB iPod video shows up no problem when I plug it in. Additionally, every time I plug in the iPhone, a Windows dialogue box pops up saying "Camera connected" and asking me if I want to launch any of a variety of listed programs. This also happened before I upgraded iTunes; however, I would just hit cancel and there seemed to be no ill effect as it would connect to iTunes with no issue.
Any suggestions?

On a side note, I really should learn not to upgrade to the latest version until a patch to it has come out... this has bitten me far too many times for me to agree to install a new version right away.

Additional info: I just tried it on another computer that has the previous version of iTunes installed. It recognized the iPhone just fine and told me there was a firmware upgrade to 2.1 available but that I would require iTunes 8 to install it. I don't think 'upgrading' both machines to version 8 at this point is a good idea...

Yes exactly, but for me it's DEAD. Windows doesn't show it at all. It's like there is something in either iTunes 8 that turns windows against iPhone, meaning maybe the USB driver that kills any connection, or maybe there is something in the mix of iTunes 8 and firmware 2.1 that's fishy. Either way it's clear that is more prominent on windows vista 64 bit.

At least for users with windows 32 bit they can find easily downgrades to iTunes 7.x to test if this fixes the bug. I googled alot for iTunes 7.x 64 bit but no luck. I even tried to install a 32 bit iTunes 7.7, although it warned me that it's strongly recommended to use 64 bit software, but it didn't work since at launch it detected that the library was created with a later version of iTunes so it wouldn't launch.

PLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEAAAASE APPLE FIX THIS! Is driving me crazy to think Apple has such hic-ups considering i was thinking of buying an iMac to replace my PC and my Windows ever lasting problems. APPLE UPGRADING IS ABOUT BETTERING THE PRODUCT ! At least that's what your ad was about when it compared PC Vista vs XP (downgrade).

Your upgrades for iphone are doing exactly that, at least this latest version.

I found the answer to my problem:

FOUND THE ANSWER!!

Apparently when you plug your iPhone in to your computer, Windows will "sometimes" install the drivers as a camera, putting them in the wrong place. This is why it will pop up in Windows so you can take photos off, but iTunes can't see it. SO, what you have to do is move the driver file (USBAAPL.SYS) to the correct location. Follow the directions I found below & your iTunes should be fixed (worked for me):

What works is to just force the drivers on what windows thinks is a camera, i.e. to ‘update’ the device to use the correct driver. There are some hints on how to do this already listed on this forum, but I’ll try to give some more detailed information:

1. First off you need to have iTunes installed and the ipod touch plugged in
and recognized as ‘something’ e.g. digital camera (it shouldn’t really
matter what it’s recognized as, but it needs to be found by windows).

2. Search for usbaapl in the C:\WINDOWS system folder:
o open windows explorer (e.g. Right-click Start and then click ‘explore’)
o right-click the WINDOWS folder and select ‘Search’).
o type in usbaapl and hit Search – try to ignore the dog!
You should find the driver info in a sub folder of
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE e.g. C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE\usbaapl_A65621D65F5B7 507DD7B22331826547BDD2D206B
Remember that location (either leave the search box open or copy the folder
name into note pad – you’ll need it later)
If you don’t find usbaapl.sys, usbaapl.inf etc. then your drivers have not
been installed with the iTunes install and you’ll have to reinstall iTunes.

3. Locate the ipod-camera device:
o Open the device manager, e.g. using Start > Control Panel >
Performance and Maintenance > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager
o Look for a device called ‘ipod’ - if your ipod shows up as
‘digital camera’ it will be under something like ‘imaging devices’.

4. Update the driver:
o Right click the ‘ipod-camera’ in device manager and click on
‘Update Driver’ – the Hardware Update Wizard will open.
o Check the ‘Install from a list or specific location’ then click ‘Next’
o Check ‘Search for the best driver in these locations’. Un-check
‘Search removable media’ and check ‘Include this location in the search’.
In the text box below type (or better copy and paste) the folder
containing the ipod driver information found in step 1 (in the example
above it was C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE\usbaapl_A65621D65F5B7 507DD7B22331826547BDD2D206B),
then click Next.
You should now see something like ‘Apple ipod device driver’ or so. Continue
installing that device. Once the driver has been installed the ipod will come
to life and iTunes (if you have it open) will show it.

So i assume this wouldn't work if windows stopped detecting the iphone when it is plugged in at all. I mean no detection, no charging no nothing.

Anyway since i don't have anything to loose i'll try this tomorrow and see what's what. Meanwhile it would be great for more feedback on this from others.

Are there any others with the same symptoms???

Why doesn't Apple react quickly to this??? It's getting more shamefully as the day goes by.

Hello people,

I tried the above cure for this but with no results. It seems that windows detects that it has already the latest drivers for iphone.

You can see attached the pics with the situation :

PS: If someone can help me with other USB drivers than the ones that come with itunes 8...or where i can find them, i would appreciate it.

The fix worked for me although I took a simpler approach. I could not find the driver file you mentioned in my itunes installation kit, did a google search and found that many users have made it available for a single file downlad.

Check the folder 'C:\Windows\system32\drivers' for the file, 'USBAAPL.SYS '

If you could not find it there try download USBAAPL.SYS driver here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/137237103/usbaapl.sys

Mirrors:

http://www.badongo.com/file/10856115

Once you have the file in the proper folder, use the update driver function in device manager and the iphone will be recognized as an Apple USB device and will appear in itunes.

Guys i managed to make it work again.

First of all i found this which was more or less helpful:
http://iphone-chat.org/itunes-wont-recognize-iphone-1019/

Then let me tell you the story of the headaches for today. This morning, after i uninstalled itunes, i posted the above posts with the pics attached regarding my situation with iphone in device manager. As you can see windows had shown me some error (the yellow triangle next to the USB device) saying it cannot started since some drivers were missing or corrupted. That was the situation after the upgrade to iTunes8 and firmware 2.1.

After seeing and posting that i though why not fiddle around with the drivers since i didn't have anything to loose. I then uninstalled the driver, check boxing the option to delete the driver files too. Then i unplugged the iPhone and plugged it in again. Windows started to search for drivers and was able to see it as a digital camera, allowing at least to access it (for pics) and to charge it. Installing itunes again proved to not change anything since the phone was not recognized by iTunes.

Then i proceded to uninstall iTunes (again) and the "digital camera" from device manager. Unfortunately there was no option to delete the driver files along with the uninstall. Later on after google-ing alot i found that in fact windows pulled the file usbaapl.sys from it's repositories EVEN THOUGH i manually deleted it from \windows\drivers and \windows\inf just to make sure it's a clean uninstall. Unfortunately this was somewhat of a bottleneck since every time i plugged in my iPhone it only charged it, not even allowing me to see the pictures (meaning there was no digital device to access from my computer. That didn't resolve regardless of what i did.
BUT in the end somehow i got another copy of the file from the rapidshare link, and then made a FRESH install of itunes8. After wards somehow the files got right and windows saw the Iphone for what it was.

Hope this helped ! I will further check this thread to offer further explanations as good as i can to anyone in need. Shame that i had to go through so much trouble to fix what supposedly had to work perfect right from the start.
