Intermittent send failure using GoDaddy POP account.

I receive my email through MobileMe, but send using my domain host, GoDaddy, because MobileMe won't let me use my Jacquie@TonalVision.com email address. For months now, ~25-30% of my emails hang up when they are being sent and after a while I get a message that the server has timed out. Typically, all I have to do is click on the message in my Outbox, and send again, and it goes out fine. This is usually just an irritation, but occasionally an important message doesn't get sent on time because of the disruption.

I've checked with GoDaddy and my settings are all OK. They said it may be an issue with my software, security settings or ISP (Comcast cable). Any suggestions?

Myself and a buddy are having these same issues. The posts in this discussion about using alternate SMTP are helpful. My conclusion - it's totally GoDaddy. The fact that typically the first message goes out fine then those after get jammed makes me think that GoDaddy is doing some sort of session/sending limitation. It could be that Apple Mail doesn't properly "terminate" the initial send session, so then GoDaddy jams up and and won't let anything else be sent. Manually quitting Mail then breaks that session and you're able to send (at least initially when you restart Mail). I'm not 100% on that, though, since I have no hard proof.

The problem is not with Apple Mail, I use Entourage and my partner in the office uses Thunderbird, same problems. So it seems that it's either with GoDaddy or something in the Apple OS?

Just sent an e-mail to GoDaddy support referencing this thread, we'll see what kind of response I get. Suggest that everybody e-mail their support and reference the thread, maybe that will escalate it.

A few days ago I posted my observations about this same behavior.

When I send while connected to cox and send a mail via their servers, it fails
I then use a wildblue server while still using cox and it goes out
I can then use cox server without fail until I let computer go to sleep then I have to repeat above steps after waking up
Restarting does not change behavior

Really odd deal is, I can not use my cox server, gmail servers or .mac server until I use the wildblue server (which is powered by google) - then any server works, until wake up...

I also have tried connecting to different ISPs and get same behavior - this is NOT an isp problem

I have this problem with Apple Mail fairly regularly. I use for managing several mail accounts (.mac, gmail, yahoo, aol), and the mail app can get hung such that mail sent from any of the accounts doesn't go out.

Generally either taking all accounts offline and then back on, or restarting mail will clear the problem allowing the mail to go out. Restarting always resolves the problem.

I have had the problem for several months as well. I used Entourage and it would happen from time to time, but much less frequently than with Apple Mail (I recently switched to Mail so that I can use Daylite DMI). With Apple Mail it happens about 50% of the time I am sending. It happens on my new 3G iPhone too, which as noted above, is even more frustrating because it requires the phone to be tuned off and on to force the send. Since it seems to be a problem across all platforms, then it is most logically a problem with GoDaddy. That said, the problem is more frustrating in Mail than it was in Entourage because Mail DOES NOT have a simple send button in the outbox whereas Entourage does. This shortcoming in Mail is frustrating because there should be a force send button in Mail, it just makes so much sense. When 50% of your emails must be totally reopened and resent it basically means you are sending half-again as many emails as you really need to and that amounts to a huge time-suck. SO, GoDaddy - fix your servers and Apple - give us a force send button in outbox!!!!

According to http://help.godaddy.com/topic/167/article/4715, "If you enabled SSL, use port 465. If you do not have SSL enabled, use port 25, 80, or 3535 for your outgoing port."

I still am having this mail sending problem so I'm going to keep changing the outgoing server port to see if I can find a good one. So far 465 is working fine but I'll report back in a few days.

I have the same problem as Jacqueline Greff. After many calls to Godaddy and Apple and both telling me to call the other, I brought my mac into an Apple store so someone at the Genius bar could check it out. They told me to switch the port to 25 and voila, it worked for a short period of time. Quit working w/o explanation and no change in settings. I can receive but not send via Mac Mail with my Godaddy account. Tried Thunderbird but it doesn't work either. If anyone knows how to fix this problem, please let me know.

I've been having this issue for about 1 year now.. I've talked to godaddy a couple of times, tried all ports, and SSL to no avail.. If you debug a little you'll see that you can connect to smtpout.secureserver.net, but the goddady server hangs on the first attempt. Cancel and retry and it will send.. and then continue to send for some time.. After a number of hours of not connecting to the godday server, you will get a timeout.. and then it will work again...

You can verify this by telneting to the server.. 1st time you will connect, but get no response.. 2nd time you'll see the smtp sever identify itself.. and will respond to commmands..

Cant believe godaddy hasnt solved this yet..

Instead of using smptout.secureserver.net I have been using 64.202.165.58 and so far I've met with great luck.

After pinging smtpout.secureserver.net for it's IP, I noticed that it re-routed to smtp.starfieldtech.com, which is some sort of SSL certificate outfit. I'm guessing that OSX is freaking out a bit on that first redirect. Pointing Mail.app to the IP itself seems to have resolved this issue for me.

I tried that and it didn't work for me.

Some additional notes for the thread:

1. I have never (ever) experienced this with my outgoing GMAIL or Verizon mail servers. Gmail is IMAP and Verizon mail is POP. Gmail is using SSL.

2. "Turn SSL off" is no solution. SSL serves an important security function.

3. When sending emails without attachments, simply retrying is usually enough to get mail to go through. When sending mail with attachments (any size), I find the problem to be a lot worse and often I can't get the mail to go through at all. It starts to transmit and then hangs up. I suspect somebody's code is riddled with bad timer values and/or handshakes.

My assumption is that Apple and GoDaddy can't be bothered to solve this 'years old' problem, so I'm not going to waste any more time on it.
