Error (-42023)

I just upgraded to iTunes v8, and tried to buy some music. The first half of the album downloaded just fine, but the rest...I got an unknown error (-42023). Anyone know what this means? Please help me!

By the way, if it helps any, I was buying the Dr. Horrible soundtrack.

I seem to have the same issues as everyone else. No troubles with iTunes store purchases until the first purchase after upgrading to 8.0.

On Saturday I was able to download the first 3 tracks in my cart just fine, the rest failed during processing with -42023.

I copied the files from the Download directory to another disk and deleted them. This allowed me to download them from the store again, but they continued to fail during processing. I tried this multiple times. I also did the security update, but after the reboot, I was no longer able to download fresh files.

I logged a complaint on Saturday and today I received a canned email with very little technical help. It suggested I check the support docs and FAQs and check the settings of any firewall software (none of which has changed, the only variable in the environment is the upgrade to ver 8.0). I had all of the songs in the album I purchased put back into my available queue. I started the download and was successful for the first 3 tracks only. The others failed again with the same error.

I guess I'll have to log another complaint, wait 48 hours, get the next 3 files, log a complaint, wait 48 hours etc etc etc...

It's good to know that this isn't just a random thing. Rob brought up something that may be important to know.

The combination of having 10.5 and iTunes 8 doesn't seem to have any problems, but using 10.4 and iTunes 8 DOES produce this problem.

I was fortunate that my other computer hasn't been updated to iTunes 8 so I asked the technical support team to re-issue my album and it downloaded PERFECTLY!

This took a full week of trying different methods and now I've come to the conclusion that iTunes 8 & OS 10.4 are not a good combination.

If you have another machine running iTunes 7, use that machine to complete your store downloads.

Re-issuing the albums was what it took for me too -- and to their credit, support contacted me within six hours and reinstated the downloads of their own volition. The support side of things was as painless as it could have possibly been.

I did end up downloading on the G5 with 10.5.4 and iTunes 8. Even that took a long time, though.

Song files (in batches of three) would download in under a second and then hang on the final processing step. It took 50 minutes to get all 95 tracks.

You have to click the "Report a Problem" in your cart in the account info thing.

If that fails then you need to submit a support request via the website.

And yes I have 10.4, and iTunes 8 is being AWFUL. It's DRM related because it asks for authorization and then tells my I'm already authorized. And I have 17 -42023 errors in my download cue. It's always after downloading the complete file too.

Support re-issued the downloads but they still won't download.

hey David,

Any chance you can go back to iTunes 7 or maybe have another computer with iTunes 7? If you do have access to another computer with iTunes 7, use that to download and transfer the music back to your main machine.

You'll have to request for them to re-issue the downloads first though.

Also, on the machine with iTunes 8, the songs are there, but iTunes 8 is not processing the file to allow you to play it on your machine. Because of this, there are temp files in your iTunes folder. Just look for "Downloads" in your iTunes folder and delete all the files there before you copy over the new music files.

Hope that somewhat helps.

I don't understand why you guys keep doing the delete the cache, contact Apple dance. You can solve this very easily on your own, you just need a little persistence.

Just keep hitting Resume All until they all finish. I tried resuming each song individually at first, and that took about 5 attempts per song until it would finish successfully. Then I started hitting Resume All and out of the 15 or so songs, it usually finished 2-4 every time I hit the button.

It does work. Just keep hitting the Resume All button in the lower-right corner of the Downloads screen.

How many times did you try, and did it manage to finish any additional songs at all?

I initially tried resuming individual songs and after trying and failing 3 times I gave up. Then I read somewhere else (don't remember where) someone said they tried repeatedly and it worked, so I did it a bunch more times (probably 10 in total for the first song) and it eventually worked. I went through about half of my errored songs that way, until I finally got the idea to try the Resume All button, and that ended up being much quicker.

Don't give up unless you've tried it at least 10 times would be my advice. It's a lot faster than waiting for Apple Support.

Well I feel stupid. I realized I've been trying to "Report a Problem" all wrong. I thought you just click the button. It's not totally clear that you have to click a link (that doesn't look like a link) next to each track you are reporting. So of course I did that and it worked just fine.

For now, I am downloading tracks onto my Dell laptop. I am sad to report it's worked flawlessly while the Mac still has issues.

I also upgraded to iTunes 8 and restarted and then went and brought an Album. Only the first 3 songs came down and all the others generated the 42023 error. I also made the mistake of restarting my machine to see if it helped only to have them disappear from the download window. Once I managed to work out how to report a problem the other songs were reset for me but again only 3 songs came down and the last 6 generated this error again. I can't report a problem now so have emailed support at iTunes. I really hope they are able to sort it out as something that should only take a few minutes has consumed about an hour now. Pity I did not leave my iTunes at version 7 as I have not had problems like this before.

I've been wanting to buy more music, but with this issue with iTunes 8, I'm definitely holding back.

Kiwi->If you could find a computer that has iTunes 7 and authorize it, you can theoretically download the songs and transfer them back to your computer with a USB key.

It's a shame that iTunes 8 is still available as a download since this is such a widespread problem.

Unless an iTunes 8 update to this bug is imminent. Still patiently waiting.
