Anyone used a Nano 4th gen with a Bose SoundDock?

I hope to buy a 16Gig Nano to replace my aging 3G as soon as my local store has them in stock. I talked to a sales person yesterday and he assured me that a new Nano would charge with me Bose SoundDock but after reading posts regarding charging issues with the new Touch I'm understandably concerned.

Has anyone charged their new Nano with a SoundDock? Mine is an older unit with the volume controls on either side of the dock connector. I guess I could just take it to the store with me and verify it works. They did have a SoundDock in the store but it's a somewhat different design.

You need to find out if your Bose charges at 5 volts or 12 volts. A lot of devices use 12 volts and will not charge any of the new ipods or the iPhone 3g. Most manuals don't say (it seems to be a secret) so you may have to contact Bose or take it in and try it like you said.

The 4th generation Nano, 1st and 2nd generation Touches, and the iPhone all use the same charging voltage. I presume that since my 3G iPhone works fine in my new (early 2008) Bose Sounddock, that the new Nano will also work with later versions of the sounddock. I can't tell you what the answer is with older (ca 2005/6) Sounddocks.

If you buy one, you have 14 days to return it, so do not get custom engraving and then try it out. If it doesn't work, return it.
Or as you mentioned, take your Sound Dock in with you to the store and verify they charge before you buy.

p.s. Could you post back, if you buy one, and let us know how it went? How do you like the Sound Dock by the way? I was looking at one, but boy they are pricey.

We just received our Nano 4th generation. It does NOT work with the Bose sound dock to charge. You can play music on it but it will not charge. I am going to call support tomorrow to see if this problem can be rectified or not. Also, when Apple used to provide a regular wall charger with ipods used to work with all ipods we've owned. That also does not work with this new nano. So it seems to me the only way to charge it is via computer, but I am calling tech support tomorrow to double check. That's just my experience so far...

You might contact Bose (or go into one of their retails stores) and inquire about the charging issue. I know those Sound Docks cost an arm & a leg, so they(Bose) might be working on a solution for the many angry existing customers who are going to find this same issue.

Ipod nano 4th gen does NOT charge in the Bose Sound Dock. Apple has changed the mating receptor on the nano so that it has a fire wire plug configuration rather than a USB one. It's pretty irritating and I can't help but wonder if Apple did this so we all have to go out and buy new speakers too.

I too just bought a new (16 GB) 4th Gen nano, and the Altec Lansing iM600 speaker dock. It won't charge the nano either. I am VERY ticked. Also, my old Kensington dock that plugs into my stereo won't charge it either!! So, IS there a portable speaker dock that DOES charge the new nano???? And that sounds REALLY good too???? I would seriously drop $400 on the Bose system if it worked.... HELP!!!!!!!

lost without my tunz.....

I have 2 Altecs, and a Bose doc. My new Nano says it will not charge in these units. Hum... I am going to call Apple and see if it might be solved with a software update.

I just read that Apples chargers will not work either, so I just tested my(small charging brick)and it does charge my new nano. Other tests: All my Altec Docs do not charge. My older Bose doc will not charge. My new Alpine Player will charge. My older Alpine touch screen car player will not charge. That 2 yes and 4 no. I was going to get the new Touch to replace my 32 GB that does work in all these units, but..... will I run into the same problem?

Yes, you will run into the same problem. The 3G iPhone, 2nd Gen Touch, 4th Generation Nano, and 2nd Generation Classic do not charge via the firewire pin (which is no longer the firewire pin on these models).
