I had the same problem when I tried to install my nano. I also have xp on my computer. I called apple and they told me the problem was with "MY Computer" which i didn't under b/c my computer is new. I called the computer company and tried to fix my USB port, Well no one was able to help me. It took me 3 days to try to get it work, i think that there was something wrong with my nano. The bad thing it that you only have one call with the apple tech, so that means that if they didn't help you...you lost your call.

Sorry..for my responce being so late, well after calling my computer makers, and no help from them, i went to the device mangers in the control panel and i updated my usb, i really dont know what happened, all i know was that it was working. Did you try calling Apple? and did you try calling your computer company? Another thing you can do is go to an apple store, and there at the stores the have guys that are there to help you with any problems.

I tried that. several times. i even tried uninstalling the driver, reinstalling the driving, restarting my computer, resetting the ipod, and then plugging it in. AND it still did not work

grr. now the computer my ipod WAS working on isnt working anymore either

edit- ok i got it to work! i tried this thing in another thread

you put you hold switch on and off, then hold you menu and select button for about 8 seconds when you see the apple sign press menu and turn on your ipod and voila it should work
