iTunes Freezing after 10.5.5 update.

After running the OS X software update seeded today, iTunes is freezing whenever I am on the iTunes store. I cannot force quit and I also lose control of the mouse after a couple of minutes. I have to force a restart by holding the power button down for several seconds. It has happened 4 times and now I am afraid of going to the online store. Anyone experiencing this problem? I am using iTunes 8.0 BTW. This is the first time I have had to force restart my computer or had iTunes freeze on me.

How do I fix this?

you'll find that most of those problems, are involved with installing the update, corrupted updates upon installation and such......

most are cleared up by doing an install from their system disk, and then a combo update to this latest update... eliminating their 3rd party and conflicting software.....

(for those who haven't yet, always back up before an update) incase this is the route you have to take.

this update does appear to have fixed many problems, (once a person gets it installed)... including the 20" iMac problem of freezing while scrolling only in the itunes store,

After a couple of nights of browsing the iTunes store for at least 90 minutes each time ~ NO FREEZES!!!

I'm remaining hopeful that this latest update has solved the issue. I also verified / repaired disk permissions. Browsed videos, TV shows, podcasts, coverflow, you name it... no problems. Hopefully we'll all be able to put this problem to rest very soon!

The problem is not solved for me.
Running 10.5.6 Build 9G55
iMac 1.9 GHz Power PC G5 with iSight

I still have freezing problems when running my iMac in normal mode. NOT just in iTunes. I will be running almost any application, or just even browsing the contents of a folder in Finder and everything but my cursor freezes, or I get lines of bright colors all over my screen.

It is really frustrating. Anyone else still having issues?

sorry to hear that you're still having problems with freezing...weird...I haven't had any for a while now, even before 10.5.6 - ever since I did a wipe & reinstall - and the only freezing problems I was having before that was in iTunes...sorry I can't help but there were some reports that people were having problems if they didn't download the combo update for 10.5.6, but they were supposedly install problems, not freezing problems...

wish I could do more to help - I know how frustrating it was with iTunes before 10.5.6 - hope you find a fix - and let us know when you do...happy holidays and happy new year too! 🙂

turns out...my issue stemmed from RAM all along...some years ago i installed a PNY Optima 512MB RAM stick in my G4...and everything was Peachy-Keen until 10.5...just today, i removed the stick, and my computer, while running "slow" on only 512MB, is MORE STABLE than with the extra stick.

lesson learned.

hope this helps some of you all out there...if you have PNY RAM, you should ditch it for something else, like Crucial or RAMJet!

spoke too soon...(seems to be a problem of mine!)...computer froze again! this time, it was a hard freeze, with NO WARNING!

music was playing in iTunes, and the screen was "black" because of energy saver...when i woke up the screen, and tried to switch to Mail (using Apple + Tab), the Computer froze...with the music skipping...and no Crash Report on relaunch!

i give up.

i have all stock everything in the Computer (except for the Hard Drives and the IDE cable)...i don't know what to do next.

any ideas?

should i change the jumper settings?
use the OEM IDE cable?

this is lame.

😟

I really liked my G4, too...would've kept it but needed at least a new graphics card besides the hard drive and since it was a 766 mhz, couldn't update to 10.5.x, so got an iMac...and love it! except for the iTunes problem that seems to have been corrected...hope yours stays that way, too...

and even with all the iTunes problems and the unusual poor response from Apple about them, just want to wish Steve Jobs a speedy recovery! without his vision, the personal computer would be a LOT less fun and a LOT more frustrating!
