iTunes Freezing after 10.5.5 update.

After running the OS X software update seeded today, iTunes is freezing whenever I am on the iTunes store. I cannot force quit and I also lose control of the mouse after a couple of minutes. I have to force a restart by holding the power button down for several seconds. It has happened 4 times and now I am afraid of going to the online store. Anyone experiencing this problem? I am using iTunes 8.0 BTW. This is the first time I have had to force restart my computer or had iTunes freeze on me.

How do I fix this?

iMac 24", iTunes 8, OS X 10.5.5; scrolling the TV Shows page locks up iTunes and the computer, needing a force restart. No iPod connected, AppleTV switched off. This is completely reproducible and has happened half a dozen times in the last hour. The PAC thing didn't help either. Permissions have been repaired, to no avail. Apple needs to fix this.

It's just a suggestion folks but I've just tried turning off Intego NetBarrier X5 and I have been able to browse the store in iTunes without problems for about an hour now. I have tried as hard as I can to get iTunes to freeze and it just keeps on going.... for now that is. I'll keep at it for the rest of the day a see how I get on.

It would be good to know how many users in this thread are using the Intego X5 suite?

I had a problem earlier in the year with Time machine failing to back up or read the drive and that turned out to be Virus Barrier X5 causing the problem for me and quite a few other users . In that instance I simply excluded my Time Machine drive from Virus barrier's scanners and it started working again.

Although I've had this problem since I bought this mac, three years ago, I've always used Intego's software. Coincidentally, I'm not using it on my old PowerMac g5 and I haven't had any problems with iTunes or Time Machine.

It might be that Intego is causing the problem again. I know that it mucks up Skype on my machine.

I am only having problems with my imac (intel) my macbook and mac mini are also are intel and not experiencing the same problems as you all are having. Everything is updated to 10.5.5 and i think everyone should post what computer they are using when this freezing of itunes is happening during scrolling in the store. Also i am using the mac wired mouse.

My machine is fixed and working fine now. Problem occurred on an iMAC 24" 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. MB Pro (2.5 GHz Intel) and MB Air (1.8 GHz) worked fine and never had a problem. Eliminating the purchased track that is no longer on iTunes from a playlist that was synced with one of the Apple TVs cured the problem. I have no idea why.

Note that I tried several mice and they had no effect.

I think whitby is on the right track here. I have been unable to access the main TV Shows page without iTunes locking up immediately since installing 10.5.5. Tonight I disconnected my AppleTV and was finally able to to get to the TV Shows page without a problem. However, after scrolling up and down a bunch of times, iTunes locked up again. So, I'm still not sure if it has something to do with tracks that are in a library but that no longer exist in the store (as whitby contends) or if it's something else. I have a lot of work to do if I want to start hunting down tracks that are no longer in the store.

In response to Jason L, I do not have any third party add ons to iTunes. On a more positive note however, I have not had any freezing occur so far when I browse the iTunes without Safari running. That is the only thing that I can report. I am not sure if any of you have noticed this either. I am still apprehensive though, and I try not to spend too much time browsing. Support has not been able to help me out, and if this happens again, I will probably go to the genius bar and see what they suggest. In the meantime, if anyone has the freezing issue without Safari running in the background, or can suggest a "fix" if they are related, please let me know. Thank you.
