iTunes Freezing after 10.5.5 update.

After running the OS X software update seeded today, iTunes is freezing whenever I am on the iTunes store. I cannot force quit and I also lose control of the mouse after a couple of minutes. I have to force a restart by holding the power button down for several seconds. It has happened 4 times and now I am afraid of going to the online store. Anyone experiencing this problem? I am using iTunes 8.0 BTW. This is the first time I have had to force restart my computer or had iTunes freeze on me.

How do I fix this?

Happened again today after a couple of worry free days. This time I left Safari running in the background when it happened. I have been careful to just browse iTunes without any other apps in the background or leaving my iPod connected. Today I forgot about it and it happened again. I am pretty sure that all my freezes have occurred while Safari was running also. Anybody noticing this trend as well?

I've been having this problem with my Intel Mac Pro since the day I bought it nearly three years ago.

Not only does iTunes freeze but it makes the Mac drop all internet, file server and network connections. I've tried every means possible to solve this including going straight to Apple but no joy. They blamed my internet connection but as I've moved house and changed my network hardware several times since I can probably rule that out. Besides my partners Vista PC (spits on floor) runs iTunes without a hitch.

The only option I have is to 'force quit' iTunes and reboot the entire network. It is becoming so frequent now that I can last on iTunes for maybe one or two songs and I'm hitting force quit again. It has been much worse since 10.5.5 but I suppose that is because iTunes 8 is accessing the internet far more often.

Also I can no longer use the Apple TV as iTunes freezes when it syncs with that too.

I was going to give up, buy an iMac and use the Pro as a file server but it seems that all models of Intel Mac are affected? It's strange that my old G5 PowerMac seems ok ..... for the moment.

This is almost making me want to head to the dark side and buy a pc ........... I did say almost! LOL!!!

I still don't have a solution, but this is what I have figured out;

For me, being in Australia, when I login to my US Account and try to access TV shows, it locks up the system and I need to reboot. However, when I am in Australian Store and viewing the TV shows, it works just fine. Wonder what that is; May be the number of shows in US is lot more than Australia and also, the new HD thing..

App store, music and all works fine. But US TV Show Store is surely freezing my mac for now.

Not for me it didn't. After hard booting and turning my computer back on I went back into the itune store scrolled up and down a few times and it froze for the second time both times I was not logged in. I won't try a 3rd time. Does it pay to call apple care and ask, this seems to be a bug issue and I don't want a band aid work around solution. I am upset this is happening now, I was going to purchase an Itouch tomorrow, guess I'll be on hold until I see a software fix from apple. BTW I had no problem this afternoon listening to songs in my purchased file while browsing the internet, the computer just froze when going into the store page.

I am having exactly the same problem, only it has only just started (I installed 10.5.5 when it was released earlier this week). Everything worked fine until today i.e. I could browse TV Shows and buy shows as required. Today I entered TV Shows and tried to scan down the home page for TV Shows and the whole machine locked up. If I did not scan down and did a search it seemed to work and I purchased a couple of shows with no issues. Somehow the problem is triggered by moving around the home screen for TV Shows. Music purchases work fine. I repeated this 5 times. So it appears that if you scan down the page for TV Shows, the machine locks up solidly (no response to mouse clicks, cursor moves correctly but no response to clicks and dock (which is on hide) never appears) and the big red power button is the only solution. I bought several Macs based on the reliability of them compared to PCs. Seems my faith in Apple was a little misplaced.

Just an update. It does not matter whether you go to the TV Shows page. If I page up and down the main iTunes store page, the same thing happens. I have tried iTunes with a PC using Vista and iTunes 8 and it works OK, although the scrolling is very very jerky. I am going to try it on my other MACS and see whether this is a MAC problem generally or just one of my machines that exhibits the issue. What I do know is that I will probably need to move back to my PC since Apple takes weeks to sort out these issues.

Final update and it seems to be cured whether by something I did or not I cannot tell. I tried it on a MacBook Pro with 10.5.5 and logged into my account at iTunes and it works fine. I tried it on a MacBook Air with 10.5.4 and logged into my account and it worked fine. It appears to be machine specific.

I have two Apple TVs synced up with the machine giving me trouble. I also have music purchased under 2 Apple ids. Unfortunately one of the Apple TVs (the last one I purchased) will not sync with music purchased under any account except the one it is set up to allow purchases under (this is not the case with the first Apple TV!!) which is now my main account. So when I synced up I had a warning that it could not sync music purchased under the account which was not in use in the second Apple TV. I had to buy all the music again (Apple would not help me by merging accounts or explaining why one Apple TV worked with more than one account and the other did not - a quick way to get an extra $40 or so....) under the Apple ID I use for the second Apple TV. However one of the tracks does not exist in iTunes any longer and I could not purchase one with the id I need for the second Apple TV. This is the state in which iTunes was misbehaving.

I have just eliminated the rogue music track that I cannot repurchase from the sync playlists for the second Apple TV (thus removing the warning) and now iTunes appears to work OK. This may be a complete coincidence, but all I can tell you is that the iTunes store appears to work correctly, now.

Hello,

Try using Disk Utility and Repairing Disk Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. Only takes a few minutes. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility.

Make sure iTunes is not running when you run Disk Utility.

Now, launch iTunes and try accessing the iTunes store.

Carolyn 🙂

I have been running the disk utility and repairing permissions. It isn't fixing the problem. At this point, I am simply going to wait for Apple to release iTunes 8.1. I won't be visiting the store until it is fixed. An application should not cause such a hard crash. This is a very serious problem, which utterly shatters my faith in the stability of the Operating System.

This isn't a user problem, it is an Apple problem. A big one.

Until then, I wait.....

Thanks for the suggestions, but none are working for me either. The freezing can occur at any given time or place at the store. I have had it freeze looking at podcasts, movies, or whatever. The latest software upgrades in many areas are the root of the problem. Much like Mobile Me, it seems iTunes 8.0 was rushed to match the release of the new iPods. Rather than start threads all over, the other issues I am having include, mobile purchases at the app store or iTunes store always fail (after version 2.0 upgrade and higher), iTunes remote app no longer shows in devices (after v1.1 upgrade) even though it works. Lots of bugs that I hope will be addressed soon, I hate feeling nervous on my Mac. Has anyone had it freeze without Safari running in the background? So far that is the only link to freezes I can come up with.
