Trouble Installing HP Photosmart C4480 Series

Hello, I just purchased an iMac yesterday and I want to set up my printer, but I don't think the installer is working correctly. I am trying to use the Setup Assistant, but my device won't show up.

On the first screen after the introduction-type thing, the printer doesn't show up at all. So I clicked "My Device is Not Listed" in the bottom left corner. Then I click Continue and my printer shows up, so I click on it and then click Continue again.

After doing that, nothing shows up and after about two seconds I get an error message with "If your device is not listed, it is not supported by this installer. Please visit the HP website to download an installer if one is available."

So basically my computer doesn't know that I have a printer hooked up and I am unable to install the software that came with the printer in order to remedy this problem.

My printer is completely connected with a USB cable and it is turned on. I'm getting really frustrated because I'm a first-time Mac user and I have no clue what I could be doing wrong.

If I need to be more detailed please let me know - this is a fairly desperate situation.

You haven't said, so I ask...
Do you mean you are trying to install software from a CD?
There is/are software updates available using "Software Update" that include a newer version driver for your printer. Try that.

i have disconnected the printer vis usb and pluggeed it back in.

i am still getting the "if your device is not listed it is not supported by the installer" message.
is there something i am missing? i cannot believe how difficult it is turning out ot be to install this thing.

I'm having the exact same problem.
"if your device is not listed, it is not supported by this installer"

1. Hooked up and turned on HP Photosmart C3180 to my Mac OS X 10.4.11
2. Downloaded HP Installer_PSC3100v9.7.1.dmg from HP site.
3. Installed HP Software
4.Ran HP software

When asked to select device, there was nothing to select. clicked on "device not listed" checkbox.

got this:

"if your device is not listed, it is not supported by this installer"

I also have an HP c4480, and the the hp setup wizard produced the same error as the previous user. Device not listed. I have downloaded the latest driver and the latest version of the software from HP.

The device printed right out of the box, but nothing else works. Does anyone have any idea how to get the setup to work or get the other functions working?

Thanks

Here's what worked for me when I had the exact same problem (i.e. installed software but driver could not find device):

1. Unplug and then replug USB cable (just in case)
2. Open Macintosh Hard Disk on desktop and double click applications
3. Double click Hewlett Packard folder
4. Double Click Device Utilities
5. Double click HP Set up assistant icon
The registration window opens as before *but this time* recognizes device right away (including serial number!) and driver installs

No idea why this worked for me but it did.

I just bought a brand new MacBook. It came with an HP Photosmart 4580 printer. I have the same problem listed below. the installer or HP assistant doesn't recognize the printer. mac says call HP but they're closed. I've installed the CD that comes with the printer as well as downloaded the software for the 4580 printer. Could this be an old or obscure printer that the apple store is trying to unload? I bought Mac so things would work and work simply.
