New iPod randomly skipping songs

I got a new iPod classic 120GB, replacing my old 60gb. I loaded it up with my songs and stuff, and started using it, but after a while it skipped to next song halfway through a song. This happened a few times, and once the ipod even restarted itself (after displaying a low quality 8bit colour apple logo image). I then restored my iPod, and checked for latest software, and it seemed to be better for a while, but it just skipped a song again.

I'm pretty sure all the song files are mp3, but maybe some AACs. Songs that skipped played fine other times. iPod hasn't been dropped since I got it... I guess I have to take it to an apple center for warranty... Does anyone elses new 120GB skip songs?

Thanks
Rodger

Same problem here (skipping songs/sudden freezing) with same iPod (120GB Classic). Here’s what I did and seems to be working. First, restore/reset iPod to original settings. Second, get rid of Genius. Third, let the screen on all the time. That was about two months ago and no more skipping nor freezing. Worth trying. Of course, prior to that I had a long serious talk with my iPod (my main point was letting it know that an Apple product creates much higher expectations that others).

Another one to add to the list.

Sent to Apple in August and it came back with no fault found, ok for a while and then same old story. Finally got round to send it off for second time and guess what they said...?

It gets better my iPod with no faults found started skipping on the very first album that I played after having it back.

It so soon after having back that I can't book ANOTHER repair as the status is that it is 'in progress'.

Going to try the de-frag as someone else tried and will keep you posted.

Well my 80GB video ipod started doing this. The songs are completely random and will play fine if I replay them. Having a different problem with my shuffle, it will cut of in the middle of certain specific songs and won't play the song all the way through no matter what(reloaded the song, even uploaded a different copy of the same song and still won't play it. The only one I can think that it does this off the top of my head is Boom, boom, pow by the black eyed peas but there are a few others) I am completely stumped. My old 80GB video didn't have this problem, it had the problem where it wouldn't come on and no matter what would only ask you to restore it, even if you had already restored it. Apple refused to fix it but they let me buy another one for 1/3 the price. Took the deal and now having issues with it.(I didn't buy the shuffle, it was a gift). Apple seriously needs to have better customer service and needs to fix the problems with their products instead of just coming out with new "better" products. I want a product that will last, not one that needs to be replaced every other year. Going to try the defrag, really hope it works

Count me in too. I'm on to my 3rd Ipod classic after swapping for a new one at the store twice already. Ipod randomly skips songs or refuses to play entire albums - sometimes after a while locks up too. I was thinking I must have a corrupt file until I found this post and saw all the other people having the sam problem. What really amazes me is that all those geniuses at the genius bar seem totally clueless that there's even a problem here. WAKE UP APPLE!

As I said a while back, defragmenting seemed to work for me. Well, it was only a temporary fix as my iPod is now back to skipping once or twice every 60 songs. This isn't as bad as it was when I first poted here, I'd be getting the awful lo-res Apple screen-of-death as the iPod crashed and I'd have frequent skips at least every 5-10 songs.

Well, I've done some research and it would seem that there is a factor that if I do something particular in iTunes, then the iPod will skip with frequency. If I refrain from doing so, I almost have 3-6 hours between the skips, or none at all.

Here's what I have found:

I used to have a PC with a very small amount of Hard Disk space, so I would use the 'Manage My Library Manually' check box in iTunes, having Sync turned off. I would rip an album in CDex 1.51 to 256bit 48khz MP3's and then import the album into iTunes. Once my albums were in my library that I wanted to add to my iPod, I would drag them onto the iPod, I would then re-name and re-organise the details of each song/album on the iPod through iTunes under the iPod's 'Music' tab. By doing this, the frequency of skips would be higher than merely plugging the iPod into the PC to charge it's battery and doing nothing else, by doing nothing while it charged, the frequency of skips after the iTunes session would be insignificant, or even non-existant. I could get through 6 hours without one skip. Seems odd to me, but at least I no longer have the "Apple Re-Setting Everything Logo Of Death" or 'ArseLOD' for short.
