I got a new iPod classic 120GB, replacing my old 60gb. I loaded it up with my songs and stuff, and started using it, but after a while it skipped to next song halfway through a song. This happened a few times, and once the ipod even restarted itself (after displaying a low quality 8bit colour apple logo image). I then restored my iPod, and checked for latest software, and it seemed to be better for a while, but it just skipped a song again.
I'm pretty sure all the song files are mp3, but maybe some AACs. Songs that skipped played fine other times. iPod hasn't been dropped since I got it... I guess I have to take it to an apple center for warranty... Does anyone elses new 120GB skip songs?
Here's an interesting thing i've also discovered about my lovely skipping iPod (which doesn't skip as much since I re-formatted it and only loaded on about 1000 tunes.
Two of my albums have imported with a couple of songs in a different place on the album to how they are in iTunes (for instance Track 1 of Album A is on the iPod as Track 6, and Track 2 of Album B is on the iPod as Track 5 - both tunes are in the correct place in iTunes.
And can someone answer me why the **** does Apple think that haivng the monopoly on MP3 players over 32Gb means they can equip them with buggy software and then ignore their users.
Might be time to wash my hands of the smell of Apple...
Glad I stumbled onto this forum. Had mine since Aug 2009 and the problem got progressively worse. Glad i'm not alone. Heading to the Apple store today, i'll keep you all posted.
Adding my name to the wall of frustration. Lately the skipping has been getting worse and when I restart the ipod I get the red x of shame. I'm pretty frustrated with IPods now. My first one the audio jack kept dying on me. And now this?
I am beyond frustrated.
Hopefully someone will be able to find a solution to this.
My old 120 GB classic worked perfectly up until last week when it suddenly just fried out. Took it to the Genius Bar over the weekend and they swapped it out. This iPod has skipped the end of at least 12 songs as I've been listening today and from what I'm reading here, the outlook is not good. Ugh.
So there seems to be an obvious problem with Apple and their software. Whether it be the iPod itself or the iTunes update software. Whatever it may be, lot's of people are having this problem. Skipping songs, restarting, etc. Quite frankly, it's annoying and Apple needs to come up with something quick to fix this. I had no problems like this with my last 30GB iPod. I would probably still be rocking with it if the headphone jack wasn't broken. Lot's of people are unhappy, including myself.
My 80 G did this with only a couple of songs until i downloaded the latest update. Now its a p.i.t.a. to listen excuse me, try to listen to my music. unfortunately i just came out of warranty, so have no recouse.
I have a problem with skipping with a 5th generation ipod. It plays ok on the PC in itunes. But, on the Ipod, it skips. I've deleted from the playlists, reloaded it, etc.
well here's another one. i've got an 80gb ipod classic, 2yrs old. a couple of days ago it started skipping on random songs and now it won't sinc properly. i've restored factory settings as apple say to but now i have no music and it won't sinc long enough to allow me to get any on there!!
i can't believe that apple hasn't sorted this out since it's been going on since 2008. i'm thinking i may have to complain and i'll probably never buy another apple product!!
Plug it into itunes, click on your ipod and play the songs, if only for a fraction of a second. I know it sounds weird but it works. Mine started doing it, I googled the problem and several sites suggested doing this, if like me you have 40 GB plus of music, you may need to create a macro to do this for you. I did mine this morning and all is working fine now
Adding myself to this wall of shame. Bought my 160GB iPod back in 2007 and last year the random skipping started. I have formatted, reinstalled, resynced it several times and after a few months of greatness, the skipping comes back and... start all over again.
I too have been having this issue. Took my 120gb ipod back about 3 times now...Redid all my music, as I was told it was my music because the apple store couldn't replicate it using their "corrupt free" music. Got it home and bam, skipping more than ever. Decided to give up on it and just use my wife's nano or my iphone (same music from the same playlists from the same library but NO SKIPS)....Then, saw the post suggesting to play the ipod through the computer. You have to set it to manual (at least I had to) in order for it to play through the ipod, but, hasn't skipped since. This may be the work around until the problem is really fixed. So far, thanks for the help finally....NO THANKS TO APPLE!!!!!
I have a 120 GB ipod classic. I explained to my Chicago "genius" that I saw the problem once/twice a day. He played it for one minute and told me he wasn't seeing the issue so too bad. Whined and got a replacement and issue is if anything is worse. Warranty running out. Time to look at Sony?
My "genius", after trying to explain to me how a disk drive works (I'm a programmer) then told me I had a virus. And of course apple has no scan software.
Lastly, as I vent, why do I have to register a time to return a defective product for in warranty repair? Do they have that many.
had a 120 classic, was skipping songs and occasionally going to the white apple of death.
i found it was happening with longer songs (10+ mins). but i don't know if that's just cuz the longer songs had more of a chance to skip.
anyway i hit it with the windows disc defrag program. i have no idea how long it took cuz i let it run over night, but it looked like it was gonna be a while. either way i've been playing it all day no problems!
