BitTorrent Port & Airport Extreme 802.11n

First of all, I must say I tried about a dozen tutorials to get this to work and honestly, I can't get it to work 100%.

I have an AirPort Extreme set on WiFi 802.11n (secured), all updates are applied to both MacBook Pro and Airport Extreme.

I use Transmission to download legal content over the BitTorrent protocol and it reports that the UDP port is closed (red light).

Here's what I did.

I choose a port (6881) in Transmission, updated my Airport Extreme to let this port open, restarted everything, internet works fine, but Transmission still reports the port as closed.

My Apple firewall is not up. Some websites that tests your UDP port are reporting that it's opened.

Who should I trust? What do I do wrong?

If the IP address of your Mac is 192.168.x.x then what is giving this address,is it the AEBS or is it a modem/router between your ADSL line and the AEBS because I think by default the AEBS uses the 10.0.1.x.x.x range ,if you have something else between the two controlling DHCP/NAT then you will have to open ports in that. What mode is your AEBS running in?

Well I just installed Transmission just to go through the procedure, and without mapping a port I got green straight away.I notice in your pics that there is nothing showing that you have actually enabled NAT,from within the internet tab in AEBS,then on the NAT tab and enable it.I'm not sure if you add a port to open through the advanced tab that it actually enables NAT port forwarding or it just hopes that you have already enabled it.Worth a look.

You may need to forward the port in your modem by manually configuring it, which you can't do from within Transmission or any Apple software. Depending on your ISP it may require a call to them to get inside the settings. I'm on Verizon DSL with the supplied Westell modem, and get into its configuration by entering 192.168.1.1 into a browser url. But even after forwarding the port I still can't get Transmission or any torrent client to work at home. At my office, however, with TimeWarner RR, it works like a charm, with no difference in any set up. Same MBP!

Hmm. I never had such issue before with this cable modem. I was on an Linksys router before and it worked like a charm. I just had to do port forwarding and Save.

Now with this Airport it's getting way too complex for nothing.. All I want is enable one port for bittorent. I still have to try that Lighthouse soft thought.

Anybody did it without external applications? I think my setup is pretty simple with a cable modem and the Airport Extreme... 😟

It depends on the ISP and how they configure themselves. I also had a Westell with Verizon DSL and it was working great, though I did have to set up the Westell. The modem went down and they sent a new one, which won't allow me to Torrent no matter what I do, definitely not with the same configuration as on the previous one. The only thing keeping me from calling Verizon and seeing if I can get back in business is that I'm taking it as a sign from above that I'd been spending waaay too much time doing it, and filling waaaay too much drive space with stuff I'd never get around to watching anyway. : ) (Although I will not trash Honey West season one, no sir.)

This is on DSL, not cable, though. It's worth noting that Airports have been quirky for many folks in Torrentland. Go to the Transmission site and to the forums and search Airport. There may be an answer in there for you.
