Headphones Mute my Microphone

When I have my headphones plugged in, my microphone is sometimes muted. I can hear the person calling, but they can't hear me. I know that the headphones are the issue because if I pull them out of the jack, people can suddenly hear me. Sometimes pulling the jack out and putting it back in corrects the problem as well.

My phone has never been dropped or damaged in any way, and I have had this problem with different sets of headphones. Any ideas?

I've had the same problem a few days ago, after receiving a call on my hand-free system, it seems to be related to all the problems coming with the use of headset, like the sound not going back to normal after using the headset.
I can't believe that Apple hasn't solved that issue after so long. It is insulting to all the people who are Apple consumers, a matter that simple should have been resolved in no time. It's a major issue an d I shouldn't have to tweak my Iphone for hours to be able to ear when someone is calling.

I have some Sony headphones that indicate "work with iPhone" and they do. These are stereo in-the-ear headphones without a mic. Sometimes the mic on the iPhone is activated and sometimes not. It depends on if the mic pin in the jack isn't making contact with the conductive "mismatched" part of the plug. In other words, headphones without a mic will worked, but are a jury rig at best.
