ipod nano in ipod sock...no scratches

I seem to read nothing but complaints everywhere about the nano and scratches. What a lame deal to have a scratched up ipod! However I personally have not had this trouble at all. I have been carrying my nano half the time (I have had it for weeks now) in my small jeans pocket like Jobs at the keynote. The other half the time in my pocket with my keys, change, earbuds and everything else in that pocket. However in both these places it was in my ipod sock. Which is entirely too big for it, but it seems to even be an odd way of showing it off. When you pull that sock out of your pocket to show somebody and it looks like an empty sock people's mouth's drop when you pull the nano out and tell them what it does. Regardless, my point is.... I have not gone out of my way to be easy on the thing, I use it like I would anything else. I took the plastic off the screen and everything. Not one scratch on the thing. I do not have a black ipod though, which I know has most the complaints. But so far this thing seems easier for me to not scratch than my other ipods that scratched up right away. Which those got scratched while being in the sock I might add.

For the record, I did not post this in attempt for people to disregard what others are complaining about...there posts are just as valid as mine. I am just sharing my experience with the nano and the sock.

on a small note...my motorola rokr phone's screen is the one Iratating me. It smudges like something I have never seen befor. Maybe I have oily ears or something...ha, ha, ha

John,

I too use the sock (I prefer the orange one) and I do have a black Nano which after 1.5 weeks in and out of the sock looks very nice.

The posts of regarding all these scratched nanos gets me to wondering what is in these people's pockets? Maybe the sock works so well because the nano can't move around much inside. Maybe too many degrees of freedom in a pocket along with embedded abrasives in the fabric are resulting in all this scratching?

three words,

the sock rocks!

Apple is the classiest company around!

Before reading that other people had problems with the iPod Nano scratching, I actually called Apple, quite innocently. I asked them if there was a way to remove the extreme scratches that were delevoping in just 3 days of ownership. I was concerned, because my 2 year old iPod Mini never had this problem. Nor does my 4 Gig Black Nano, which I bought for a friend the same day I bought the white one for me.

Much to my surprise.... before I completely finished my story to the customer service rep, he asked me to verify my address. Strange? Never had that response before. Then he advised me that a new iPod Nano would be sent to me within 5 days, to replace this one that was having problems. He was setting up the refund while I was describing the problem.

Now that's class! <grin>

One thing I did want to say though, this is nothing bad against Apple, so please understand that I am only bringing this up in support of my problem I had.

To those of you who are assuming the people who do have excessive scratching... are be too picky, or over zealous about it, I can assure you - this thing is REALLY scratched. And I only used those link free Pledge wipes on it from the moment I had it out of the box. Obviously, the people who are not having this problem can say what ever they want, to us, but until you see this for yourself first hand (God forbid, I do not wish this on anyone), I think you should try to imagine that we may actually be telling the truth and we have these 1%'s that are REALLY scratched.

That's all.

I love Apple and have supported, referred, recommended and PR'd their product to death over the past 20+ years. I am proud to be able to add "sensitivity" to their long lists of "pluses" as to why I support them so fiercely.

Joseph,
Thanks for your positive post. I am glad to hear your good experience with the support. I have also had my goods and my bads with support. Overall I am most pleased with these forums. Although they can't send new product or fix most hardware in the forums, they seem to help the most. People like me will post little things (tips) they have learned with a product (like using the socks) that alot of people think at first are stupid but later on prove usefull. Then you have the level 3,4,5 posters that fix all the problems that people like me screw up on their computer (these people are awesome!). Last of all you have the people that complain. I have done my fair share of it expecially with the nano vs camera connector. But if it wasn't for people complaining their wouldn't be a new nano coming to your probley. I also wouldn't have known to be aware of the scratching issues. Although I have not had that problem doesn't mean I couldn't.

People also do have to realize you see alot of negative's in these forums, but thats because this is where people learn to go if they have problems. Its not a chat room. Apple sent out a whole lot more nano's then the post's upset here with them. Even if there was a thousand or two posts on scratched nanos, thats nothing compared to how many people didn't post. I believe the 1% you are refering to is also 1 tenth of 1 percent refering to the cracked screens, not the scratching. As far as I know apple claimed this is the same material that they used with the fourth gen ipod and its not defective. Again though I am not defending apple as they should replace any products that are truly defective.

As far as the pledge wipes...I have never gone that far. I just use the ipod sock to wipe mine off. I know it seems rough but it works for me with no scratch's. I have also never even dreamed about buying a black ipod. Although they look awesome and apple puts them out, black anything scratch's easy. We all know that. If you bought a white car and a black car which one are you going to drive through a rough car wash or drive down a dusty road. Once you do are you going to demand a refund. I just meaning you find life easier with light colored products. Black products require entirely too much care for me.

Again the purpose of this post is not to disagree with anybody who has had scratching issues. Hopefully mine doesn't end up that way anytime soon.

Speaking of complaining this article and the interpretation of their poll in this article are driving me nuts.

maybe its just me?

Yeah I have to give it to Apple, they have some amazing customer service.

I am one of the ones that called about the scratch issue as well. I was treated with empathy and kindness by the reps I spoke with. When I picked up the phone to call Apple, I had convinced myself that I would not buy Apple products anymore. After talking to the reps and getting treated so fairly, I changed my mind. I'll definitely buy more Apple products, and once more cases available, i'll purchase another Nano because it really is an amazing piece of hardware.

I have had my black 4G nano in an iPod Sock since buying it Sept 13. I thought I was being clever until I realized that I am getting "sock scratches" in my nano. The worst/deepest/nastiest scratches on the face of my nano are at regular intervals, matching the edges of the "ribs" in the socks.

I am not crazy upset, although admittedly a little disappointed. If anyone recommends a particular solution to clean up the face of my nano, I would appreciate it.

Sorry, the socks haven't worked for you. I have not had that problem at all. I originally thought apple would only put out these socks if they knew they would not scratch ipods. With my socks the only time any of my ipods get scratched is if something falls into the sock. Like change or something. Its strange that your ribs of your socks matching your worst/deepest/nastiest scratch's on your ipod make it sound like they are scratching it like sand paper or something. I use that same thing to SCRUB my screen clean and get no scratches. Maybe my pants are a little baggier or something so it doesn't push the ribs of the socks into the screen? Weird....

Anyone else have these marks from the socks?

Tina,

search this forum for a product called "displex". It sounds like it does a great job buffing out more serious scratches.

I saw a post for Brasso as well, but that one makes me nervous.

I saw a post about a week ago claiming that their nano appeared less scratch prone AFTER they had buffed out the first layer of scratches, suggesting that the upper surface may be slightly softer than the bulk of the plastic?

thanks Tark for the suggestion. I saw the posts about "displex", I may give it a try. They Brasso make me nervous too!

I have also ordered some screen protectors, to keep it spiffy after I take care of the ones I already have.

As for the suggestions to get a case... once it arrives, all will be well. I thought that a bit of care, and the use of the sock would keep it in nice shape in the meantime.

I'm glad others have gotten good--better than I would have expected-- help from support at Apple. When I called, I was told to take it into a store for a suggestion on a cleaning product to help with the scratches, and to buy a case.
